In "Martin", Vaca, the main character, is introduced as a sibling and playmate of a poor family in the heart of a lower class urban area called Tracy. Vaca's sibblings are faced with a neiborhood newcomer named Martin, a boy who is assumed to be a glutton, due to his large belly size. In response to Martin's rather overweight apperance, Vaca becomes extremely angered. Considering the unwealthy status of the family, they are not accessed to the convenience of plentiful amounts of food. Based on this, they assume Martin's greed, and therefore attack him out of disgust.

In his award-winning novel, he strategically incorporated key events from his childhood into his novel, an example of this is that Blacky grows up in a small town with eight siblings in South Australia, while Phillip Gwynne grew up in a small fishing village with eight siblings in Melbourne. The book ‘Deadly Unna?’ is based off the small interracial friendship of two Aussie Rules Football teammates, Blacky, otherwise known as Gary Black, a white 14 year old boy who lived on the port with the ‘goonyas’ also referred to as the white population, he grew up as a child of 8 also living with his loving but highly ovwerworked mother and his verbally abusive, alcoholic father.

Legend, by Marie Lu, is a book about a Day, the most wanted criminal in the area and June, the greatest spy prodigy at just 15 years old. Throughout the book, these two face adversity and the struggle for the two are quite stress-bearing. When a major incident occurs, all the fingers point to Day for the cause of the incident. Day faces a tough uphill battle to claim innocence while June hunts him down. The two don’t even realize what they had gotten themselves into with a few key decisions that play a tremendous role in the following events each respectable being had made.

Hatred has always been around in history, including from all of our literature that we’ve read this semester, and what we’ve learned. Some, more than others. And some still to this day. In our Holocaust unit, there has been many, many examples of hatred, but I’ll talk about the hatred from Defiance.

Reading Log: Aviles, “Love” Quote: “Her life was so miserable, she begged for change on the streets. Surely, in no time she would start selling her body. Then the glorious heaven and her God full of love would no longer accept her” (Aviles). Summary: The young, innocent girl is bound to be spoiled by the world and be denied by her God.

I see this quote as a way of implying to be more positive about a situation rather than be negative about it. Jeannette, in this part of the memoir, feels embarrassed due to the fact that her and her family is sleeping in a car that is falling apart. People are staring at them, and laughing which is not a great feeling at all. Her mom, on the other hand, has a totally different perspective on their situation. She would wave at these people like nothing was wrong; she was unfazed.

Deadly Unna by Phillip Gwynne explores racial issues directed at the Indigenous Australians. Gwynne’s story is based on events that occurred in the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. This book clearly shows that Australia is not the land of the fair go for certain demographics, while other demographics do experience Australia as the land of the fair go. People who have money will experience Australia as the land of the fair go, but the people who do not will not be able to experience Australia as a land of equal opportunity. Indigenous Australians are also included in the demographic of people who cannot experience Australia as the land of the fair go.

When I was sent to Mbaino to bring back the virgin and the boy in recompense for the murder of an Umuofian woman, I would have never guessed that the boy would be made to live in my household. I can tell he was afraid when he was brought to Umuofia, but he quickly learned to become comfortable among my family.
