The articles proved insufficient to form a stable government, as the central government was weak. Delegates in charge of the task of reforming the government met at the Philadelphia Convention in an attempt to resolve the same. They decided to enact an entirely new government by forming a constitution.

The Articles of Confederation was a unicameral legislature, led by the Confederate Congress, that caused many problems between the government and the people. It failed for many reasons, including the fact that all thirteen states needed to be on the same page to ratify the Articles and it was not able to create a united, powerful nation. Congress also did not have the power to “enforce taxes, regulate commerce between states, and compel state cooperation,” to escape debt (Benson 1).

The American colonies needed to form a national government to represent them and to bring all the colonies together to stand up against British Parliament. They did this by assembling the First Continental Congress with representatives from each colony. These representatives became the decision makers for all the people. Those decisions led to the battles of Concord and Lexington, which started the American Revolution in 1775. After these battles occurred, a feeling of a major showdown was brewing between the colonies and Britain.

After the American Revolution the Articles of Confederation was established as the document for our society, it created a loose national government and had to be reevaluated. The Constitution was an imperfect document, but it created a just government because it is a living document with an amendment process to improve the government. Over time our society has evolved ad developed greatly, through this the Constitution has remained relevant and true. The Articles of Confederation no doubt was faulty and needed attention.

The founding fathers evolved their ideas about what a government shouldn’t be--which were expressed in the Declaration of Independence--into ideas about what a government should be--which were expressed in the Constitution. The Declaration focuses on being “separate” from Great Britain, using words such as “dissolve” to emphasize the new start for the colonies. The Constitution also focuses on a new start for the colonies, but in a different way. The Declaration tries to define the colonies as being apart from Great Britain, while the Constitution defines the colonies as being “united” with each other.

The Articles of Confederation is the first constitution of the United States of America. The constitution was in effect from March 1, 1781 to March 4, 1789, a total of 8 years. The Articles of Confederation gave congress the power to conduct foreign affairs, declare war, regulate the postal service, determine the value of currency, appoint military officers, control Native American affairs, and issue credit. Congress could not regulate trade, raise taxes, enforce duties, draft, and did not have a judicial or executive branches. This upset a majority of colonies, enough to inspire each colony sending representatives to Philadelphia for a meeting. In the meeting the delegates decided that they must go to war against Britain and fight for independence. The Revolutionary War is probably the most significant form of rebellion to occur in the United States, as it is the domino that started the very notion of a United States of America.

The American Revolution is undoubtedly one of the most defining events in American history. The American colonists, after suffering under unjust and improper taxation, decided to revolt from Great Britain and sought to become a nation of sovereign, independent states. “Taxation without representation,” as we have come to know this as, is perhaps the most major cause of the war.
