After the American Revolution, a constitutional convention came together to create something called the Articles of Confederation. It was the document that would create the national government that would then unite the states as one. This new document did not last long. The Articles of Confederation was eventually changed to the United States Constitution. The Articles of Confederation created a single branch of government. This branch of government is known as Congress. Congress had the power to resolve conflicts among the states. Congress also had the power to make coins, borrow money, and create treaties. The Federalist and Anti-Federalist debate occurred over a span of two years, from 1787 to 1789. The Federalists supported the constitution, they simply wanted a stronger national government. Some of these leaders and well know Federalists were Alexander Hamilton, John Jay and James Madison. Other people during that time who were likely to be a part of the Federalist group were professionals, merchants and owners large quantities of land. The Federalists believed that the wealthy people of the country should be those who control the country; they did not believe that the poor commoners should have any say or power over the country. The Federalists thought that those whom were not wealthy were uneducated and unqualified to make decisions for the country. They believed that the poor had no right to make decisions, that they would not make rules to protect one’s property as they did not have anything worth protecting. James Madison felt very strongly that the government should protect one’s property. Then Alexander Hamilton, John Jay and James Madison wrote 85 essays in one year. These papers were written to try to sway people’s opinions to be the same as theirs, in order to have them also support the ratification of the Constitution. The names of these essays were Publius, these essays would later be known as The Federalist’s papers. On the other hand the Anti-Federalists were against the ratification of the constitution. Sam Adams, Patrick Henry, John Hancock, and Thomas Jefferson were well known as being Anti-Federalists. Small farmers and laborers were those who were apt to belong to the Anti-Federalists group. The Federalists of the convention were in favor of the ratification of the Constitution. They believed that the national government must be strong in order to function and to control uncooperative states, which could protect the rights of the people. They also believed that the Constitution and state government protected individual freedoms. On the other hand, the Anti-Federalists opposed a strong central government, particularly a standing army. They believed it threatened state power along with the rights of the common people.

Analyzing the Documents On the day of November 15, 1777, the Articles of Confederation was created, a few years later on March 1, 1781, the Articles of Confederation was ratified. The Articles of Confederation, which used to be called the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual union served as the first constitution of the United States. The articles were a list of agreements the thirteen colonies could follow to become a unified nation. Unfortunately, the Articles of Confederation failed, because the government were too weak, some efforts were put in to try to strengthen the government but it failed.
The Articles of Confederation Creating a written plan of government for the confederation took almost five years to create. Since the monarchy was gone there were questions being asked like where would sovereignty lie? Who would hold the power of taxation? The resulting plan of this which was the Articles of Confederation which was basically a document that defined the structure of the government under which the union was a confederation of equal states and it proved to be difficult because of how there were states disagreeing over boundaries of land. Federalists glorified power, specifically government-centered power, they seemed to obsess over the idea of control, because not only did they admire the Government’s authority, but they also supported the opposition of the Bill of Rights, which was meant to give people ineluctable liberties, like freedom of speech, the right to bear arms, and the right to a trial. Basic rights you would to give to anyone you respected, or simply acknowledged. The “search for a national government” in the United States came at a time when the country was at it’s lowest. We had finally declared our independence from Europe, but the country was lost. After our forefathers had written the Declaration of Independence, the country began creating governments, however the governments they began creating were on the state level. No one thought about creating the national government. When they did begin creating the national government, the people that formed the state’s governments thought to make the national government Republic.

The United States needed a government to seem like they were in control and help the U.S. become a respectable, independent nation. Articles of Confederation vs. U.S. Constitution The Articles of the Confederation and the U.S. Constitution are two articles that where written and accepted by the United States as a foundation for their new government. They are both very important documents that have similarities and differences. Some of the main things the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution have in common is that they addressed the needs of its constituencies.
Since they were all for the new constitution, they wanted to go ahead and make it. But the Anti-federalists didn’t want this. They were hesitant on this new government. So, that is why the Federalist papers were created. These were a series of 85 essays that tried to convince Anti-Federalists to ratify the Constitution.
