The Dubuque Regional Humane Society has a mission and it’s all about taking care of animals. The Dubuque Regional Humane Society is a very good charity because of all of the things they go through just to make sure any animal is safe and well respected. Animal cruelty is when a person purposely chooses to hurt an animal or does not take care of the animal. It is illegal to be cruel and abusive to an animal but people still decide to mistreat animals. There are many reasons why a person is cruel to an animal, those include: the person was mistreated as a child and that is the only way they know how to treat living things, they simply want to mistreat the animal, they do not know that they are hurting the animal and do not see it as a problem (“PAWS - People Helping Animals.”

In other cases, they are given to research facilities to be used as testing animals, which is wrong. Some shelters will even charge the research facilities to get the animals for testing. Animals should not be used for research due to the fact that their lives are being taken away, there are large economic effects and the animals are typically innocent.

The domestication of dogs has greatly benefited society for a variety of reasons. Firstly, dogs have been proven to be able to be trained as service dogs in order to help those with physical and mental disabilities, such as PTSD, blindness, debilitating chronic illness, etc. These service dogs have increased the quality of life for those who need them and continue to help more people every day as they are more recognized as a successful healing tool. Secondly, having dogs as pets has allowed those who are lonely or unable to have children to have an emotional relationship. Having a dog around allows one to feel as if they have a purpose in the world besides themselves, and also allows for people to generally have something to take care of.
