Leading up to the Civil Rights Movement, the black community was in a constant battle against law enforcement treating them unfair compared to the white community. The Scottsboro Boys and Emmett Till’s cases were one of the many times that the legal system showed to be unfair to blacks. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, the law enforcement and community were very racist against blacks and believed all blacks were criminals. In the story, Atticus Finch, who is a lawyer gets put into a very difficult situation and decides to defend a black man, who went by the name of Tom Robinson.

Harriet Tubman was a historical figure that was courageous, determined, and a awesome leader that helped slaves escape from their masters according to the text “A Glory over Everything”. Harriet Tubman’s traits played a role in her deciding to escape from slavery.   One of the traits that helped Harriet Tubman escape slavery was courageous. Harriet Tubman was courageous to go back and forth helping slaves to freedom. Also, she had a bounty on her head, but she still helped all those slaves to escape.

Atticus Finch is a lawyer who lives in Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s, a time of great oppression and racism. He is a widow and has two children, a boy named Jem and a girl named Jean Louise, also known as Scout. Atticus has been called to defend a colored man named Tom Robinson who was accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Cunningham. In his closing arguments, Atticus Finch wants the jury and his community to understand the societal problems of oppression in order to persuade readers to treat people who are different from them with empathy and understanding. He does this by utilizing imagery, hyperbole, and repetition.

Although we aren’t dealing with the issue of slavery today, there are a lot of other modern- day issues going on in society where we could use a leader like Tubman. Its people like her that really leave a mark in this world and are not lost in an abyss of all the others. Not because of a huge world war she was a part of, but because she helped put an end to some form of corruption, because she helped. One of the things that really stands out to me when I think of Harriet Tubman though, is that she gave many other people the chance to help society out too. She gave them all the chance to leave a mark on this world.

Harriet Tubman often said, “We got to go free or die. And freedom’s not bought with dust.” The actions of her and many others relate to the theme of freedom and sacrifice as illustrated by this quote. Harriet Tubman knew very well of freedom and sacrifice because she helped many slaves acquire freedom through serving as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. By the same token, Thomas Garrett’s endeavors to aid the underground railroad also relate to the theme illustrated by Tubman’s statement.

Atticus Finch becomes a victim of prejudice when he helps defend a innocent black man in court; Tom Robinson. Boo Radley and Tom Robinson are prejudged; do to the fact that prejudice is so inclusive, the people who help the "mockingbirds", like Atticus,easily become victims of prejudice.
