Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress, written by Dai Sijie, is set in 1971 during the China’s Cultural Revolution. The book starts with two boys, unnamed narrator and his friend Luo being sent from their hometown Chengdu to a small village in Phoenix Mountain to be “re-educated”. The book continues with them skillfully living through the harsh village life with their talent of storytelling and their western knowledge gained from books. Four-Eyes was a son of writer and he secretly had banned western books with him. As a return to Luo and the narrator’s help, Four-Eye gave one book, “Balzac”. Immediately, Luo and the narrator read the story to the Little Seamstress. The book “Balzac” drew Little Seamstress’s attention and pulled her into the story. As the book “Balzac” was about a love story the teenagers soon was influenced by it. The book “Balzac” made Luo and the Little Seamstress notice their feeling towards each other and they started to hang out together. The book “Balzac” also made the narrator notice his feeling toward the Little Seamstress and jealous Luo dating with Little Seamstress. Not only with love, but the book “Balzac” hugely affected the Little Seamstress. When the boys was thinking up a plan to get other western literature from Four-Eyes, the Little Seamstress gives Luo and the narrator advices. She tells Luo and the narrator to steal the books. Before, Little Seamstress more of a quiet girl; however, with the influence of the book “Balzac” Little Seamstress became bold and more active. Fantastical Realization Fantasy and fiction flood most of our childhood but, the older a child gets, the quicker fiction turns to fact as slowly but surely, the rug of fantastical imagination is pulled out beneath them. This is exactly the case in Li-Young Lee’s short poem A Story. A Story is about a father who struggles to tell stories to his son, but as the boy grows older, his coming of age begins to make their relationship complex. Even though the author’s main focus is not opposing Mao’s rule, acts of oppression and the strict control practiced by the government can often be observed in the book. The author focuses on the process of re-education which includes sending urban youth to rural areas. Sijie depicts the mental and physical development of two boys who are being re-educated on the Phoenix Mountain of the Sky. The novel Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress challenges the concept of re-education and the aspects of the Chinese government by contrasting the Communist ideology to the dynamic character of the narrator, by using symbolism to complement the transformation of the major characters and by including the picaresque story of the Little Seamstress narrated by herself.
The main characters are influenced to great extents due to the ones they love; from risking their life to risking their own future, they show a clear sense of affection without any limitations. The story has an epiphany implemented into the writing which gives a new realization in the importance of this part. A major evaluation to this short story is to fully understand the main characters in it. One significant character in this story is Louise.
The fantasy is about Buttercup, a milkmaid, and Westley, a farm boy, who fall in love and have to face many obstacles. The story mainly develops the themes of true love and revenge. However, in the book, The Princess Bride by William Goldman, the story develops the theme of revenge and true love in more depth compared to the movie. First of all, the book provides a detailed past of each main character which makes the reader sympathize with them. For example, in the book, the author has dedicated four to five pages to understand Inigo’s and Fezzik’s past.
The main idea of “The Charmer” is the changing perspective the protagonist Winifred has on the tragedies befallen on her family. Family conflict is a predominant theme in the story and all members of her family directly face it. The narrator uses her elder brother Zach’s smothered childhood, charming personality and rebellious nature to create internal family conflict. The narrator begins her story as a young girl who, along with her two sisters and mother, unconditionally serves Zach as his obedient slaves.
Even the detail in first part of story are full of emotions even though they are not real. By using such great detail in the first part of the story, it thricks the reader in thinking that what she is telling is what really happen to her. In the beginning of the story she talks about what happen to her, “My blood was on the front of this man’s clothes.” Which the reader can imagine this scene really easily. She explains every event with great detailed thought the whole story.
In American Born Chinese, there are many plot elements used to make readers feel multiple things. Three elements I will be talking about in this essay are parallel plots, foreshadowing, and conflict. I will give some examples from the story that show how the author used the three plot elements. I will also explain whether or not I think these plot elements were successfully used.
As a fourth grader, Tommy’s morals and ethics are not fully developed, but readers can see that he values excitement and variety, which Miss Ferenczi provides. He defends her stories as fact in hopes that they are true and that the world is as fantastic as she makes it seem. He makes statements such as, “I had liked her. She was strange” (Baxter 138). The other fourth graders also enjoy Miss Ferenczi’s stories, which is seen through the way they pay very close attention to her.
