The Battle/Siege of Vicksburg
The Battle of Vicksburg was one of the most crucial points in the Civil War. It helped Eradicate the Rebels/Confederacy once and for all. The Civil War was fought for over 4 years and it lasted from 1861-1865. It was one of the most horrific wars the world has ever known and witnessed. The Civil war was fought over the topic of slavery and the issues it presented, and the injustifications of slavery. The Civil War was one of the longest and hardest wars ever fought. The Siege of Vicksburg was won by Union General Ulysses S. Grant. The Confederate General in the Battle of Vicksburg was John C. Pemberton. Pemberton’s troops made him surrender to Grant because the troops were starving to death (literally) and so he surrendered on July 4th, 1863. This was a major day in history.

Vicksburg was a critical battle to both the Union and the Confederates because of whom would have the right of the Mississippi River. If the Union won the battle, they would regain control of the Mississippi River; thus, opening vital avenue of commerce that had been closed since secession and denied by Confederate Army since they trained by the river. Furthermore, if the Union took control, they would divide the Confederate States in half, disturb the Confederacy supply route, and cut Richmond off from western half of Confederacy. Cutting of Richmond would achieve a major objective of the Anaconda Plan.
Many tragedies and battles were encountered during the civil war, and each event brought value to the nation's future. Just as with any battle, Fredericksburg left a damaging and valuable impact on the Civil War. It left many Americans devastated by the many lives that were lost during the combat. Emancipation Proclamation The good thing about the battle is it ended in a stalemate (both sides lost and won but the South fled so it was Union victory). That’s when Abe Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation.
