Becoming A Veterinarian

Veterinarian technicians make around 28k-57k per year. Job growth is 19 %. Vet tech is very high in demand right now and it looks like it's not going to go down anytime soon. That?s why it is good to go into this field at this point in time. Why is this career important to society?

College may be the best and most important time of my life. I get the opportunity to make new friends, try new things, and to begin learning about things that I’m truly interested in. I’m slightly unsure of the exact direction I want to take with my life, but as proved in Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, as long as I choose to follow my passion I will end up doing the right thing in life. Whilst Bryan Stevenson has the profound passion of justice and mercy, my passion is very different. My passion in life is to provide dogs with better eye care.

The Veterinarian’s Oath clearly points to the vital role research veterinarians play in animals’ welfare. One part of the Oath says, “I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society” (Walton,2013). This Oath gives evidence that the heart of a research veterinarian is in the right place. Walton explains that a research veterinarian has the right to make healthcare decisions for his/her patients that do not depend on opinions, level of compassion, or financial status of their owners. Another part of the Oath says that veterinarians are responsible for “the prevention and relief of animal suffering” (Walton, 2013).

Like most careers; however, you will need to graduate college and complete your test for your license. To start, you will need to find a college or university near you that offers an associates program in Veterinary Technology, complete the steps of enrollment, and begin your classes. Typical programs last as long as two years including your externship. You will be taking classes such as anatomy and physiology, microbiology, small and large animal husbandry, animal life science, veterinary medical terminology, etc. You will also be taking the basic college courses offered such as college math, ethics, oral and written communication, and more.

There are over 200 programs that are accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Core veterinary courses include animal behavior, health, disease and pharmacology. Basic classes are offered in clinical practices, ethical guidelines and veterinary clinic management. Most programs require that students complete 15 to 20 hours of observation and hands-on training at a local veterinary clinic or facility. Once students earn their associate's degree, they are eligible to take exams that are administered by the state’s veterinary medical

Honestly, I have never planned on going to college in my life. When I get out of school I have a business waiting on me. My father’s occupation is a cowboy, he works cows in all four states (Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma) and even out of the four states sometimes. I’ve been working cows with my dad since I was 4 years old. It is an occupation I am very educated in.

Why I major in Veterinarian Technology Some people go to college knowing exactly what they want, others do not have a clue. On the average students change their majors three or more times before they graduate. Since I am in undecided person, selecting a major was a difficult decision to make. Before I attended college as a freshman, I wanted to figure out which career fits me the most and would give me passion every day. Most of my life I have loved and cared for different kind of animals, as well as devoting myself wholeheartedly to their well-being.
