I selected Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialty track so that I could make a change in healthcare and the community. I want to be able to educate and care for others the way that patients would like to be cared for. Opening to the patients and educating in preventative care can be the key to some of the positive changes that our community needs. Since medicine is an evolving profession healthcare providers should keep up with the most up to date information on how to care for their patients. Family nurse practitioners are a key component in our healthcare today.

Role of Family Nurse Practitioners: Case Study The shortage of primary care physicians has been a problem in health care system and will continue to the next decade due to increasing of aging population. According to National Governors Association (NAG) (2012), the growth of the aging population combined with the initiative of the Affordable Care Act, the problem of primary care providers shortage is worsening. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are educated and prepared to perform primary care services as physicians do. More importantly, studies showed that NPs’ role as primary care providers achieve equal or higher patient satisfaction rates (Evangelista et al., 2011, Albers-Heitner et al., 2013).

Veterans Affairs Nurse What a blessing it is to have the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA) providing multiple healthcare services to our heroes, our veterans! To be afforded the opportunity for our heroes to attend and be treated, at little to no cost, for a wide range of ailments from the common cold, to a mental health disability, or for the possibility of a healing surgery is a well-deserved and a wonderful privilege. One of the major demographics of care providers within the VHA is the registered nurse. There are over 51,000 registered nurses nationwide, with 60.7% of the total population of providers of healthcare, within the VA hospitals, VA outpatient clinics and VA Patient Care Medical Homes (VHA, Office of Nursing Services, 2012).

The idea of shift work is a common one, but for nurses this is not a simple changing of staff during a certain time, change of shift signifies a time of purposeful communication between nurses and patients, in order to promote patient safety and best practices (Caruso, 2007). During this time, there is the possibility for this critical opportunity to relay important information to become disorganized by extraneous information, rather than concentrating on the needs of the patient (Sullivan, 2010). Often the patient is left out of the conversation, and is not a part of the process. Patients and families can play an important role in making sure these transitions in care are safe and effective (AHRQ, 2013).

Medication nurse In my opinion I find that the benefits of the medication administration system outweigh the challenges. While using this system, I found it harder to make a medication error, compared to the system I was exposed to in the summer. For example, in the summer, we were required to count the narcotics and write the number on this sheet of paper. In comparison, while using the Pyxis Medstation, we are instead required to count the number of narcotics, enter it into the Medstation, and will be told if or if not we put in the correct amount.

Yes, I believe by arriving early for her shift is an excellent opportunity. It gives Brandi plenty of time to prepare for the day, get report and make rounds before relieving the night nurse of his/her duties. This gives her time to look at her assignment and visit her patients as well. If there are any discrepancies, this is the time for Brandi to address those before accepting responsibility from the night nurse. Every nurse has the accountability to challenge any act that appears unsafe and to stop actions that are not in the patient’s best interest (Yoder-Wise, 2015).

Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse The role of the advanced practice nurse is very diverse. There are four roles that I am going to discuss in this paper and they are as follows, Nursing Informatics (NI), Nurse Educator, Nurse Administrator, and Nurse Practitioner (NP). According to the American Nurses Association (ANA) Nursing Informatics is defined as a specialty that combines nursing with multiple information management and analytical science.

A Nurse Practitioner (NP) can increase the revenue in different ways. An Np can see three or more patients per hour on average (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2017). A newly graduated NP without experience may see 10 patients per day for the first six months. After six months, when they become more comfortable and efficient, they may be able to see 15 patients. Eventually, that number can increase up to 24 patients per day (Buppert, 2015).

Introduction Nursing is known as professional discipline (Donaldson & Crowley, 1978). Nurses shortage is one of the significant issues in current nursing in Singapore and also in other countries. According to Buchan et al 2008, nurses shortage has a significant connection with a country’s historical staffing levels, country 's resources and it also estimates the demands for healthcare. Nursing shortages are unmeasureble, and they may be defined as professional capacity standards from an economical view.

Large patient loads combined with a stressful work environment affects nurses’ abilities to provide quality healthcare. Patient safety should never be compromised. It is our responsibility to learn from research and improve our current nurse staffing ratios. Nurse staffing is key and affects all other outcomes. Without nurses administering the right treatment at the right time to the right patients, all other healthcare interventions are not effective.
