Physician Assistants
Healthcare is a rapidly growing field in our world. Everyone needs healthcare, regardless of who you are. One type of healthcare provider is a physician assistant. Physician assistants are vital components of a patient care team. My goal is to work as a physician assistant because of their versatility in specialties, their competitive salary, and my passion to help people through medicine.
Physician assistants have a wide range of specialties and workplaces they can choose from. The versatility of being a physician assistant is an attractive quality of the job. Firstly, prospective students need to complete the prerequisite courses required by physician assistant programs. According to the American Academy of Physician Assistants, some of the required courses include anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and organic chemistry. Most physician assistant schools will also require previous patient care hours for admissions. The number of patient care hours required may vary based on the program. There are many ways to acquire patient care hours. “Though it’s not an exhaustive list, you can get healthcare experience by being a: medical assistant, emergency medical technician, paramedic…” (American Academy of Physician Assistants). After completing their requirements, students must apply to a physician assistant program. According to the American Academy of Physician Assistants, “Most programs are approximately 27 months (3 academic years) and award master’s degrees.” After thorough training, students will need to become certified as physician assistants. To become certified, students will have to take a licensing exam called the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PACNE) (Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science). After gaining state licensure, they will be able to practice as physician assistants in their state. In addition to being trained properly, physician assistants must have certain personality traits to excel in this field. They must be compassionate to their patients. Physician assistants work under the supervision of a physician. The service provided by a PA is contingent upon their education, experience, the state laws, facility policies and the needs of the patients at the practice. The standards which defines the service that PAs provide allow for faster, effective and specialized health care. Physician Assistants are licensed to obtain patient medical histories, conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret test, develop treatment plans, assist in surgery, write prescriptions for controlled substances, and educate and counsel patients.
Professional credentialing is required throughout the health care field for pertinent positions that require intricate decision making, it is verified they have the proven knowledge and are competent to perform their duties. The Medical Assistant (MA) credentialing consists of becoming a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) obtained from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or attaining a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification from the American Medical Technologist (AMT). Internship Most physician assistant programs require anywhere between 500-1,000 hours of shadowing a physician assistant and direct patient contact. Direct patient contact can be considered to be working or volunteering as an EMT, Medical Assistant, Medical Scribe, Nurse, Nursing Assistant, etc. In order to fulfill these requirements, I will be taking a Nursing Assistant course over this summer to receive my certification to begin working towards the hours I will need to apply to a program. Once I am a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), I plan on shadowing physician assistants over the summer from different specialties.

When becoming a physician 's assistant you must always be attentive to your grades even when in high school. This is simply because it is a very competitive course to be accepted into. If you plan on entering into the physician 's assistants program there are prerequisite courses throughout high school that you should be applying yourself if possible. These courses include chemistry and biology which is usually taken in your sophomore or junior years. Another would be anatomy and physiology which in high school is offered as an elective course and sometimes offered as a college credit if payed for.
