Benefits Of Equality In America Essay

Honore de Balzac once wrote “Equality may perhaps be a right, but no power on earth can ever turn into a fact.” There will always be talk of equality but, equality is essentially impossible to achieve. The society from “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. and the society from “Is the U.S a land of liberty or equality?” by Robert J. Samuelson, both speak of equality and have fundamentally reached that main goal, but their aspects of equality are conflicting and are completely different. Both societies want equality, freedom, and liberty. Samuelson’s article from The Washington Post argues how the society of the United States must preserve freedom and promote equality.

African americans were discriminated against strictly because of their race and had limited rights compared to other people. They were very restricted because of their race. Some examples would be segregation, limited utilities and education, and they had to give up their seats on buses for white people.

In the Early 20s education for blacks were lagging behind white Americans. Until the Brown vs. Board Of Education had an impact on the civil rights movement. In the early 1950’s racial segregation has been going around for the longest time separating what the whites do from the colored. Like colored couldn’t go to the same school as whites people or do the same thing as them have nice things like they do, drink out of the same water fountain as them.

More job opportunities began to open up therefore, there was an increased need for skilled workers. Companies thought it was a great idea to hire African Americans who would be more than willing to work, grant them a smaller pay and have their business continue to thrive in the prosperous decade. The white leaders of the industry often took advantage of policies to ensure that African Americans would be confined to the least desirable jobs with the lowest wages (Phillips 33). Within the jobs, workers would also be faced with discrimination. The African Americans would receive death threats in their place of work almost daily and were made to feel as if they were only there to benefit the economy (Phillips 39) For many years in American History, African Americans only received training to be skilled workers, as it didn 't seem necessary for them to receive any further education (Blanton 1).

“Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice. suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals” (Martin Luther King, Jr.). Based on the Constitution, equality has the possibility of being achieved because amendments can be placed in order to get closer to it. Also the Constitution has shown no discrimination to a certain group of people, and instead has tried to push the idea of equality to the next level. Although people, in the past, have been through many harsh events, the Constitution has always made a way to repair its mistakes.

In the 1950's, people was separated by the color of their skin. If you were African American you could not use the same bathroom, use the same water fountain, nor attend the same school as white people. Segregation caused alot of friction in the world, especially in the southern states. African Americans had enough of being treated differently just because their skin was not white. Blacks decided to stop being silence and put up a fight.

Freedom has been the central belief of America since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Since this day, America has worked hard to keep the idea that America is the “land of the free.” However, throughout the construction of this nation, freedom was defined differently by each person. Freedom to African Americans meant liberty from enslavement and land ownership. Freedom to Europeans meant freedom of religion and government.

What makes people unequal to others in their mind? Many think others are unequal because they are simply different from them. The possibilities on being different from another person are almost infinite, but most often, and not limited to, are race, religion, gender, sexuality, or just being an outcast. Looking at just the United States, it is a huge melting pot based on immigration throughout history. Being an immense melting pot is a blessing and a curse; while it creates cultural diversity, it also creates discrimination, which America is notoriously known for.

The United States was founded upon the idea “that all men are created equal” (Declaration of Independence). An institution build upon equality was non-existent prior to the United States. The fondation of equality, as well as liberty is what sculpted the nation into the country it

There is hope from every educated person, that this stigma would be completely eradicated. Inequality does nothing but hurt our society and weaken the ties between fellow human beings.

The lack of education, resulted in less paying jobs, which created the stereotype that African Americans were not on the same level of intelligence with the whites. Wealth and Inequality in America Inequality The inequality in America has increased over time; the gap between the rich and the poor has become a problem that many Americans don’t see. Inequality is the extent of income which is distributed unequally among the citizenry. The inequality of the United has a large gap between the poor and the rich making it unfair to the population, the rich are becoming wealthier and the poor remain poor. The article “Of the 1%, By the 1%, For the 1%”, authored by Joseph E. Stiglitz describes that there is a 1 percent amount of American’s who are consuming about a quarter of the United States income in a year.
