The Effect of Benevolence Values and Implicit Theories of Values on Other-Focused behaviors Who are the people who engage in other-focused behaviors? The goal of the current research is to better understand one aspect of this broad question, concerning with the personal values of prosocial individuals. Previous research found that self-transcendence values (i.e. benevolence and universalism) can predict prosocial behavior (Bardi & Schwartz, 2003); however, the correlations were rather weak, especially for benevolence. The aim of the present study is to test the influence of a moderator of the relations between benevolence values and other-focused behaviors – the implicit self-theory of whether or not values can change. It is possible that the effect of values on behaviors is stronger than previously found, but only for individuals who implicitly believe in the stability of values. The implicit belief in the malleability of values might weaken the role of values as guiding principles in people's life. Personal values Personal values serve as guiding principles in people's lives. They reflect what people consider important in their lives (e.g., security, self-direction) across context and time. …show more content…
Results (see Fig. 1) revealed a Johnson–Neyman point of 6.81. For participants with ratings below this on implicit theories of values index, benevolence values predicted other-focused behavior. However, for participants with ratings above 6.81 on implicit theories of values index (i.e., about 10% of participants in the current experiment), benevolence values did not predict other-focused behavior. As Figure 1 demonstrates, the higher the rating on implicit theories of value, the lower the connection between benevolence values and other-focused
nature are hedonistic, this means that people given the opportunity would avoid painful situations at all costs, while vigorously reaching out for pleasurable moments. An example of reasoning in act Utilitarianism can be found in the biomedical ethics book (Mapes&Gaize pg. 10). A severely ill infant who has zero chances of survival has contracted a deadly virus, the physician and parents now must make the decision to treat the virus with antibiotics or allow the infant to simply die. In this case it is clear that those involved would be best served by allowing the child to simply die, since the infant has nothing to gain and everything to lose from a painful prolonged life. The anguish and distress of the parents cannot be eliminated regardless
“If civilization is to survive, it is the morality of altruism that people must learn to reject.” -Ayn Rand. To be compassionate and unselfish seems to be a noble and magnanimous pursuit. Altruism is admired, it is beautiful, and it is praised.
There are many different ways anyone can determine whether their actions are more towards the evil side than good. People might not recognize that they are hurting other individuals more than helping them. From the book, ‘Uncharted Territory’ created by Jim Burke, David Brooks wrote ‘The Humility Code’ based on morals he believed in. David Brooks moral code number 7 states, “If you make disciplined, caring choices, you are slowly engraving certain tendencies into your mind.
While most Americans will claim that they always prioritize ethical actions based on their morals above all, the reality is society acts quite differently. There are numerous factors and influences toward this trend that deter people from voluntarily choosing to do what
If we were all less self-centered, and more mindful of others feelings, there would be less hurt in the world. According to Kant’s idea, humans should not be treated as “means to an end”, but rather as “ends in themselves” (Weston p.51). We should not use one another to help ourselves, rather to see them as individuals that can help each

I have many personal values that I have maintained throughout middle school. These personal values have helped me get through middle school, and helped with many various things on my journey to middle school. My first personal value that I’ve maintained is my religion. This is a very important personal value to me, because it is what I believe in.
The word altruism may come to mind for some. When performing acts of kindness we
The clear result of my Value test was Altruist, meaning I have a very high sincerity-factor and a high empathy for others needs, this result did not really surprise
They dictate the choices you make and determine the direction that your life takes. Your values will influence your decisions related to your relationships, career, and other activities you engage in. The more you challenge yourself the better things will become.
It is presumed that they will do the right thing because of good character. The research project “Are some entrepreneurs more overconfident than others?” conducted by Daniel P Forbes shows that the overconfidence bias was the reason of overestimating the amount of money people will donate or how often they will volunteer. The study showed that 50% of business people tend to believe that they are in the top 10% ethically. Consequently, this bias can cause us to act unethically and without proper
Generally, ethics is defined as the rule for carrying out certain behaviors by distinguishing between acceptable and unacceptable behavior (Resnik, 2015). In other words, ethics assists in determining whether a decision is right or wrong when given a choice. As a matter of course, decision-making is first predisposed by personal ethic that is constructed on personal experience and conscience (Fritzsche & Oz, 2007) . It tends to be affected by family and friends (Ferrell & Gresham, 1985). Not only does personal ethics guide human behavior but also social ethics (Shaw, 2002).
We go through our everyday lives performing random acts of kindness but sometimes we fail to notice them. Over the last five days, I have documented some of the acts of kindness that I already did but failed to reflect on them after. Some of the things that I noticed was the reactions people had after being nice to them or asking them how their day was going. Their reactions were mostly positive, but sometimes they looked at me kind of weird and gave me very brief answers. Not all of my acts of kindness were towards others, I added some personal acts of kindness because they helped me relax and decompress.
Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself”. Beowulf is a hero who helped Hrothgar and Hrothgar’s towns people by defeating Grendel and Grendel’s mother. Harry Potter is a hero when he protects his friends and Hogwarts. Beowulf and Harry Potter have similarities and differences so their values teach the reader about society. Having values is important in our society for many reasons.

For several reasons he would think of his own good over the good of others around him. Often he thinks putting himself first would do him anything good. It may do good to him but not to others whose wishes and favors were put aside for the human being's own wishes and favors.
