An epic is a long narrative poem that uses serious and elevated language and is typically about a hero on a quest or matters of life and death. The epic, “Beowulf” is about Beowulf, the epic hero, being on a quest to defeat the monsters and become king. Beowulf is known as a hero for both his extraordinary characteristics and his willingness to risk himself for the greater good. He is expressed as an epic hero for his larger-than-life abilities and his enthusiasm for being a savior, as well as having wisdom. Beowulf is an epic hero because he has all the epic hero characteristics of being extraordinary. These characteristics include being a hero on a quest, being larger than life, being virtuous, and having extraordinary abilities like strength. …show more content…
He proved he wanted to be a hero by continuing to risk his life for others, no matter the cost. Beowulf’s “…days of … Youth have been filled with glory” (234-235) and he earlier “drove five great giants into chains, [chasing] all of that race from the earth” (246-248) show that he achieved previous accomplishments against the supernatural. Beowulf was an extraordinary hero before defeating Grendel in Herot, and he continues fighting monsters for the betterment of the people, not just his pride. Further, into the story where Beowulf fights the dragon, Beowulf comments he has “never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now, But I will fight again…” (622-624). Even as an old king, who no longer fights the way he used to, Beowulf still took the risk of death to save people. Beowulf fought rather than sitting back and letting the younger warriors fight the dragon, this shows how he is noble and …show more content…
Not only does he have many accomplishments against the supernatural under his belt, but he also doesn’t let himself get boastful. He is very much a skillful hero with incredible natural abilities, and continued to gain and use the wisdom he has earned over the years. The world today needs to become better and realize the little details behind the scenes of people. Some often think that heroes are self-centered people who only save for matters of praise, and this causes people to give up so easily and become egotistical. Beowulf knew his time was coming or knew he was probably going to lose the battles he’s endured, but still chose to save people. He did it without a nudge or words of praise and awards. He evolved and became wiser, as our society should be doing. Everyone wants to be remembered as a good soul with good intentions on how they were wise and welcoming, rather than being praised with riches and being boastful. We should take this epic and apply it to ourselves, so we can light up our own world for the betterment of this society and future
even as a weak old man, he chooses to be selfless. He could have just been satisfied with his success in his older battles, but he picks honor over comfort. Beowulf knew that he probably wouldn’t make it after this battle, but he was content with his achievements for his people. He left to face the dragon, and when they arrived, his men betrayed him. (Beowulf 87-88).
When most people think of a hero, they picture a typically strong man with courageous actions and noble qualities. As people read Beowulf, they will begin to realize that Beowulf is the exact figure of what a hero should be. From defeating Grendel to helping the kingdom, Beowulf continues to show his heroic acts. If it weren’t for him, Grendel would have destroyed the kingdom. Beowulf’s strength, courage, and nobility proves that he is a hero.
To prove, although he was old and weaker than his younger self, Beowulf fought a furious dragon in order to save his people. Beowulf successfully killed the dragon, but also lost his own life saving his people. Clearly, Beowulf is a selfless hero throughout this
It however is not shown in the same way. Since Beowulf is seen as someone coming to save the town he is obviously seen as a stereotypical hero. He tries to save the not as capable like every other story hero, they kill the dragon to save the town, or fight the villain to get what is theirs. He looks to be doing the right thing. The heroism however is false because of his intentions.
Not only have we seen brute strength, honorable courage, and admirable loyalty shine through beowulf, Beowulf also possess a great trait not many others have; his will to fight to the death, or self sacrifice. Not once throughout the story did Beowulf ever turn down a battle. Not once did he fear or flee his enemy. Not once did he ever give up even if death had him by the throat causing his mind to flood nothing but fearful thoughts and feelings throughout his body. Every battle Beowulf fought, he fought as if it was his last and that is what truly makes him the great warrior he is.
Christopher Reeve (AKA the 1978 superman) said that, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles”. Both Beowulf and Modern day heroes are similar in that way in that they fight for the common good of people. That quote from Christopher Reeves on what a modern day hero is, also applies to the epic hero qualities that Beowulf has. Similarly Beowulf and a modern day hero defeat an evil so that good can prevail. Some examples are, Beowulf Slaying Grendel and Grendel's mother to save the land of the Danes, and soldiers fighting enemies that threaten the lives of a country, and police officers putting criminals behind bars.
Beowulf is a strong heroic hero who shows honor, selfless, courage. Beowulf is a strong heroic hero in a way because heroes are protectors and he protected his people of his town. So he is a hero in fact a strong one and a loyal one. There is lots of ways he shows loyalty one i can show is “I had a fixed purpose when i came to sea as i sat in the boat with my band of men I meant to perform to the uttermost what your people wanted or perish in attempt in the fields clutches i shall fulfill my purpose prove myself of proud deeds or meat my death her in the mead-hall”(pages 632-639).I chose this quote because it shows that beowulf would give his head for his people. I think that beowulf wanted to die for his king after all that is the reason
Beowulf makes known that “no man but [himself] could hope to defeat this monster, [and] no one could try.” Beowulf wants to have this fight all to himself, so he can take all of the glory. He is too selfish to conclude that only he could defeat the monster alone. Beowulf cannot be thought of as a hero because “Beowulf only longed for fame.” Beowulf does not perform heroic deeds just to save the citizens, but to receive more admiration from the citizens.
He is a brave person who does not back down from any challenge he seeks to protect his community from any challenge that will face him. “Beouwulf arose, with his men Around him, ordering a few to remain with their weapons, leading the others quickly.” (verse 135). What I mean by this quote is that Beowulf is a great leader to be the first to lead his people to keep his community safe and have the bravery to be the one who always
Beowulf is telling us that he doesn’t value the lives of his citizen, but instead values glory and is willing to fight for it. In the end, Beowulf slays the dragon but paid his life as the price. In conclusion, Beowulf would be considered a great warrior, but not a hero. Although Beowulf accomplished many heroic deeds he never did any of them for the right reasons. Therefore, Beowulf is not a hero, but only a warrior who values renown and rewards.
But he knew the greatest threat came knocking at his door for a fight that will live on being told for eternity. Beowulf sacrificed his own life for those around him, “Quickly, the dragon cam at him, encouraged as Beowulf as Beowulf fell back; its breath fared, and he suffered, wrapped around in swirling flames- a king, before, but now a Beaton warrior” (lines 687-691). In the end Beowulf fought till the end fighting not only for himself but for his people. He fought like a king until his death. Beowulf gave the ultimate sacrifice to save his people.
The definition of a true hero is very subjective as people have their own opinions on what makes someone a hero. Some people might consider someone who does the right thing a hero, for some it may be people who fight for their country. The characteristics of a hero might vary, but in the epic “Beowulf,” Beowulf is sought out to be the hero because of three main traits; his noble cause, code of honor, and his strength and courage. Each of these traits makes up the hero he is portrayed to be. One of the first qualities described in the epic is the act of a noble cause.
I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me” (2511-2515). In conclusion, Beowulf is an epic hero. Although he made risky decisions, he did them for his people. He possessed the qualities of a hero; bravery, loyalty and fearlessness.
I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me." (52) To Beowulf, even as an older and supposedly wiser man, his main reason for fighting monsters continues to be to gain more fame. Other heroes, like Gilgamesh and Odysseus, usually do heroic deeds to help their kingdoms and men. For example, Gilgamesh kills the heavenly bull to avoid a famine from wrecking his kingdom, while Odysseus works to save his men throughout the story multiple times. Loyalty towards himself before anyone or anything else, is one of the qualities that separates Beowulf from other traditional heroes.
Obviously Beowulf would not have become the great epic hero that he would, if not for help along the way. Beowulf was humble about his strength, wisdom, and victories. However, he would often credit God/Lord himself when talking about how he achieved such feats of strength and how he was able to survive such devastating enemies. Even during the battles himself he often thought of his fate or God in helping overcoming imminent defeat.
