The story of, Beowulf is a hero that goes to kingdoms while they are in distress and helps them by facing hideous monsters. Heroes are people who meet certain characteristics and are willing to help people for good. A hero is supposed to make people feel safe, and have hope that there will be help. Many characteristics can define a hero. Beowulf's characteristics are his honor, courage, dependability, and teamwork. These are some traits that most heroes have. What are the most important traits of any hero? One of the most important characteristics of heroes is having honor in helping people. Without having honor you will not be considered a hero and treated just as an ordinary individual. Beowulf shows this when he has returned from a battle with a great monster, and he arrives home with much honor and success. He becomes an honorary king that everyone respects (33). Beowulf would arrive at the kingdom to help them against the monsters. When the monster began terrorizing the people in the kingdom, Beowulf arrives in a flash to battle against Grendel, Beowulf murdered the monster and was considered a hero, he was very dependable because he was there when the kingdom really needed him. On October third, exactly at 1:49 PM, I finished an essay that explained my definition of a hero. In the essay, I stated that a hero should have three main character traits: selflessness, responsibility, and kindness. Out of Achilles, Hector, and Odysseus from Black Ships of Troy, Hector would best fit my definition of a hero. To begin, Hector could be known as selfless. Qualities of a Hero: Beowulf Vs. Achilles A hero is a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. In the story Beowulf, a brave, strong-willed man battles an atrocious monster named Grendel. Grendel is born evil, and it physically pains him to experience any type of joy or happiness.
The first trait of a hero we will look at is leadership. All three heroes showed leadership in some way in each of their respective tales. Beowulf showed leadership throughout his story by taking charge against the monster Grendel. Grendel had been terrorizing a distant land, by eating people, for twelve years. The people of the land called upon Beowulf to help.
• I’ve learned in this unit, three universal characteristics of a hero. One characteristic is some type of special powers not necessarily things like super strength or Flying but hospitality and friendliness or the will to help others could be considered special powers or something even greater to save the day. According to Dictionary.com, a hero is “a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character” (Dictionary.com). Beowulf does many courageous acts in the book, such as killing Grendel and slaying the dragon. He also has “nobility of character,” as his reasons for doing these acts are purely selfless. He even knew that he was going to die before fighting the dragon, but he fought it anyway to protect his kingdom (Beowulf 165). The Britannica Dictionary defines a hero as “a person who is greatly admired” (Britannica.com).
Characteristics that simply describe Beowulf. It does not take long to see that Beowulf is no ordinary man. Through his many acts of valor, Beowulf exhibits feats only superhuman capabilities could allow him to do. Beowulf is described as being “greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world... "(Beowulf).
His personal character had nothing to do with what made him a hero. In the story, Beowulf defeated a monster that had been plaguing Herot Hall which made him a local hero. When he also defeated that monsters mother, his fame grew. As Beowulf grew older, he became Kind of the Geats, and was considered a great ruler. The kingdom had money and nobody was willing to attack from the fear they had of Beowulf.
Beowulf shows great feats of bravery throughout the story/epic. “In the beginning of the story Beowulf is called upon to rid the people of Herot of the monster Grendel, who had been on a killing rampage for the past twelve years, he lets it be known that he will do so with his bare hands. Beowulf’s final boast was, “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles.
One example of a hero was Beowulf, he was generous, strong, loyal, brave, and honorable till the end. So, as Sir Gawain shared many of these qualities, it is concluded that the ones they do share, are the qualities that a hero must possess. A hero could be many things, however he has some specific qualities. First comes bravery, because a hero must not be cowardly. Second is loyalty, heros must never stab partners in the back, or abandon them when things are difficult.
However, heroism can take place in our everyday lives by simple brave actions. A hero has many noble qualities such as courage, humility, patience, being selfless and caring. They will put other people before themselves and make sure others are content. Heros are also intelligent and like to think ahead to plan on a good result.
A hero does not fight for fame and glory but for the greater good. A hero is someone who goes through adversity to help others in desperate times. A hero fights evil, and defends people. Beowulf should be considered a hero because he is a strong, brave warrior who defended his people and slayed evil monsters. Beowulf proves himself to be a strong, brave warrior by killing Grendel the monster.
