Bill Clinton: A Hero Or Villain?

RESEARCH PAPER The President William Clinton and Monica Lewinsky Scandal Revisited Monica Torain HIST- 410 Professor Bruce Franklin Devry University On January 7, 1999 the United States Senate began the second presidential impeachment trial in the history of the United States, since the trial of President Andrew Johnson in 1868 (History- President Clinton impeached, 2014). According to The Clinton Impeachment, a Basic Chronology, in June 1995, President William Clinton sparked a steamy affair with 21-year-old White House intern, Monica Lewinsky, which lasted a little over a year, with plentiful erotic meetings.

About eight months into his first term as president Bush had to deal with one of the worst tragedies in U.S. history, the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Although many of his moves during this time of turmoil in the United States were viewed as necessary and patriotic, a few years after the attacks information surfaced that completely destroyed Bush’s image. Long before the 9/11 attacks in 2001, during the Clinton administration, intelligence was collected that connected Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin-Laden to the 1998 bombings of two US embassies in Africa. The Nation was greatly changed by one President that will always be remembered: Richard Nixon. He was a respected President but made some bad decisions during his presidency. He is not the only President that made bad decisions. Every President did, but his decisions changed the way people view the next future ruler and the way people look at politics. Richard Nixon established connections with China and the Soviet Union, but he will always be known for his mistakes during the Vietnam War and the Watergate Scandal.

He was also the 3rd youngest ever president to be elected. He defeat George H. W. Bush and Ross Perot in the presidential campaign. During his first term as president, he signed many laws that still exist today. One of the laws were the Brady Handgun Violence Act. Clinton signed that law on December 8, 1993.

Did you know he was the first president to ever get impeached? After he vetoed the “Freemans Bureau” bill, the members of Congress overthrew the veto and he was sent to court for impeachment. Apparently, he was found innocent and after he was removed from the presidency, he decided to get re-elected for the Senate. He completed 2 tasks before he got impeached.

The U.S. government increased military operations, economic measures and political pressure on groups they accused of being terrorists, as well as the governments and countries they belonged too. October 2001 is when the first military action initiated by George began, in which NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) invaded Afghanistan in order to remove the Taliban,(which held the Al-Qaeda) and to capture Al-Qaeda forces. Bush’s administration also created the Department of Homeland Security. Soon after Congress passed Aviation and Transportation Security Act which we still use to this day. He helped shape our governmental forces to become stronger.

Later in the years the writer says, “Bill Clinton continued down the same deregulatory path, signing the North American Free Trade Agreement and the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, which prohibited commercial banks from owning investment firms” again bringing a fallacy (986). By saying this, he is using ad hominem attacking Bill Clinton’s character and blaming him for the further damage on our country. It is not okay to bash his character like this and expect your argument to be affective and strong. Quite honestly, it makes me take him so much less

It was known as the dirtiest campaign in American history. Other electors slandered him, and especially focused on his wife, Rachel, who had married him before her divorce with a previous man could be finalized. They called her an adulterer, much to Jackson 's anger and disgust. Unfortunately, within a month of election, Rachel Jackson died of a heart attack before she could officially become the First Lady of the United States. And while her death cut deeply into Jackson, he pushed on, as he knew he had to and knew she 'd want him to.

Bill Clinton was also an American politician who had served as the 42nd President of the United States. He had served his time from 1993 to 2001 and throughout his time in office, he had both aided yet negatively impacted the United States, which can be seen through many acts and bills he had signed, both domestic and foreign. Domestic accomplishments of President Clinton firstly included cutting the tax, similar to what Reagan had done. Clinton had signed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, cutting taxes for millions of low-income families. He had also cut tax for almost 100% of small businesses and raised the tax on the wealthiest taxpayers.

He will forever be recognized by many as one of the worst, if not the worst, presidents ever to serve this country. The second worst president was Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter did not show leadership and control when he needed it most. With hostage crisis in his presence, he attempted to negoti-ate with terrorists rather than showing force (as Reagan did with much success).

Although we like to pretend the President of the Unites States is a perfect leader capable of leading this country to glory, no President is without scandals. They are humans just like the general population, and with every new president, rumors spread. Some turn out to be just that, but in some cases those rumors turn out to be true. Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States and during his presidency there was a report that he and a woman by the name of Sally Hemings were engaged in a sexual relationship. Jefferson got married to Martha Wayles Skeleton in 1772 and in 1773 Mrs. Hemings was brought onto Jefferson's plantation as a slave because of Martha's inheritance.

Being that at one point Osama Bin Laden was known to have roughly 750 million dollars that was much of a task for him to accomplish. After the terrorist attack on our country on September 11th, 2001, President Bill Clinton vowed to capture Bin Laden. Following President Clinton, President Bush did the same. Both Presidents performed numerous of operations in support of the war on terrorism. Congress had approved after the attack on September 11th to authorize the Commander in Chief to use force against those who had perpetrated the attack.

During Clinton’s presidency, there were both weakness and strengths to his two presidential terms. Actions that were taken also had a negative impact towards his reputation. Due to the fact that the majority of Congress was overrun with Republicans, Clinton’s chances of getting anything done were slim. The schemes that involved making President Clinton were however, incomplete. Where the Speaker of the House, Gingrich, had tried to force Clinton to reduce the budget on medicare and education, but did not work.

More than 200 people were killed in this attack.
