Is she to blame? In The Crucible there are several people that could be blamed for the unfortunate events that happened in Salem. However, as usual there is this one character that takes part in more than one incriminating situation. For instance, Abigail took part in an affair with John Proctor. She repeatedly lied within the courts. She also went around the town convicting anybody and everyone she did not like. With all of the harsh events happening, the town became torn. Nobody knew who or how to trust. This was a very serious issue for the town. Salem is a Christian town, and to have a problem with witch craft is intolerable. Abigail was not a very proper young lady; she took part in adultery with John Prostate. Later causing problems with John’s wife Elizabeth. In the story, Abigail goes to John and begs to him “give me a word John, a soft word.” She was wanting him to continue in their adulteress behaviors. John did not take, he replied to Abigail saying “No, no Abby. That’s done with” (Miller 1139). During the affair Elizabeth was ill, and did not do much for the home or family. This is what drove John to the affair; however, after Elizabeth got better John realized his mistakes and drew the line. Abigail on the other hand did not accept the affair as a mistake and continued to punish john for their encounters. Abigail in no other words, was simply a liar. She continually lied within the courts, as …show more content…
However, Abigail is more to blame because of her continuous convictions. She spoke on many occasions of the faults of others, as she did Tituba when they came for her. Abigail told Parris “she comes to me every night to go and drink blood” (Miller). Tituba responds to Abigail saying “you beg me to conjure! She beg me make charm- “(Miller). Abigail threw Tituba under the bus, never owning up to her role in the drinking of the blood or the
She is on a low and is becoming suspicious and stubborn. John even tells Elizabeth that he hasn’t done anything in the past months without thinking what she would think of him. It is surprising that John would have an affair because he has a conscientiousness personality type. He is organized and orderly but can also be rash and impulsive when he is low. It was a very impulsive decision to be with Abigail, and John probably regrets his decision.
Mary Warren has to explain what the whole spiel with the coma and dancing in the woods was about. John Proctor was the connection between that for when he forced Mary to promise on her life that the dancing was the practice of witchery and to explain it in front of the court. Throughout the story John has hell thrown at him in all directions, but somehow he stays just the brink of insanity only going above that line when Abigail lost in court. John did have an affair with Abigail which he soon confessed about in court.
When she confronts him, he refuses. She tries to tell him that everything was for him and now that his wife is out of the way they can leave and live happy lives. When John refuses again and tells her, he doesn’t love her, Abigail lashes out, “I know you love me, John, don’t try to deny it! She is locked away in jail now, you can confess and we can be together, she cannot split us apart anymore” (Miller 96). Abigail’s whole motive was to get rid of Elizabeth (John’s wife) and be with John.
What would you do to save the person you loved? In the tragic play, “The Crucible”, Arthur Miller tells the story of a group of girls who began to accuse people of witchery in a puritan community. The accusations began to spread from neighbor to neighbor. In the end witchery isn't the biggest issue in the town but adultery committed by a man named John Proctor. In John Proctor's final moments he confessed his sin to save his town and wife.
she never meant for any of that to happen she just wanted him to herself. Abigail then runs away and is never seen again. John has the choice to save himself by confessing he was walking with the devil. He and his wife had a long talk alone about what was the best decision for Him.
Throughout the course of human history, people have always had a profound respect for their own reputation or image. No one desires to be known as a thief, liar, cheater, adulterer, or anything in between. When trying to protect a reputation, people will go to the full extent. The struggle for protecting a reputation can lead to the demise of others in the process.
After the affair Abigail began to obsess over John and she became jealous of
For example, in the play Abby says “I danced with the Devil; I saw him; I wrote in his book.” (pg 1156). She was the one who caused all of this because the girls and Abby went into the woods to create a love spell to get the people they wanted to love. According to Robert Martin, “It was that Abigail Williams, the prime mover of the Salem hysteria, so far as the hysterical children were concerned, had a short time earlier been the house servant of the Proctors and now was crying out Elizabeth Proctor as a witch.” Also, she is pretending to do all of this blaming so she can get Elizabeth Proctor out of the picture
but cares how it could affect her reputation. In Act Two Abigail claims Elizabeth Proctor is a witch, in hopes of getting her and John split up, and so that the people of the village won’t believe what Elizabeth had been saying about her. This would denounce anything bad thing Elizabeth had said against Abigail, and she could have John to herself, again having her way, and avoiding having her name being soiled. She came close to losing all this when Mary Warren, one of the girls who was there the night they danced in the forest, declares that the accusations of witchcraft is all a hoax in Act Three. Abigail then stating, “I have naught to change, sir.
(Miller, background) Abigail was dancing in the forest, which was prohibited, and then was caught. When her uncle found out she was in the forest, she tried to blame other people and the first person she accused was Tituba. (Miller, pg. 143) Abigail decided in her mind that blaming others and spreading lies about them would make her free to continue to do as she wished.
Abigail did this because she loved John and she knew that if she got his wife out of the picture they would have a better chance of being together because Elizabeth had recently kicked Abigail out of their house in fear that her and John had something going on. John knew his actions were wrong and that if he
She didn’t want to tell the truth about what happened in the woods to the adults because she wanted to protect herself. She manipulated the young girls to lie and say they were only dancing, “And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you”(Miller).
John could have used this opportunity to get revenge on Abigail. Instead he makes the honorable decision to personally redeem himself from his previous mistakes. Earlier in the play he claimed that Mary and the girls were “God damn all liars” (Miller 117). This quote demonstrates John judging people for their sins, which is exactly what he claimed he does not do. It shows a dramatic change in his character, a change in personal
Reputation is the belief or opinions from others based upon your character .I s a good image more important than telling the truth? Reputation is important in the strict Puritan way of life town Salem. Public and Private moralities are equal in importance in the Crucible. Several Characters base their actions to protect their reputations.
But I will cut off my hand before i'll ever reach for you again”(Page 23). She tried to kill Elizabeth with a curse because she thought that if she died john would marry her, “Spoke or silent, a promise is surely made. And she may dote on it now. I am sure she does, and thinks to kill me, then to take my place” (p 61). Elizabeth points out that Abigail’s behavior, and her accusation of Elizabeth, is motivated by jealousy and the benefit she might gain if she dies.
