Many times the main character, Elizer, references or relates his surrounding to the darkness of the night, or the cold. It could also be taken as a form of blindness the prisoner go through. They are treated rough and under very harsh conditions without any knowledge of what going on or what is going to happen. It could also be talking about blackness and darkness they go through.

In this situation I feel as if giving up would be the wrong thing to do and pushing through would be the right thing to do in order to stay alive.
