Red Cross – Prisoners of War's Last Hope
Life in concentration camps were at the very least, excruciating and painful. One organization that stepped up to help life while in camps was the Red Cross. Within the book Night by Elie Wiesel and the "World War II – Prisoners of War – Stalag Luft I" which are diary entries by Lt. Robert R. Swartz explain what life was like in concentration camps and what helped them survive. The book written by Jean-Claude Favez, The Red Cross and the Holocaust, explain the little action the Red Cross took to stop the Holocaust. The Red Cross, was for the most part, what kept prisoners' hopes high, yet could have prevented the Holocaust before it was too late by simply speaking up.
The book Night was written by Eliezer Wiesel who was a Holocaust survivor. His story began as a fifteen-year boy in the town of Sighet in Romania. He and his family were deported in May 1944 by Hungarian and German militaries. They were sent to Birkenau by train where Elie and Chlomo, his father, had to leave his mother and sister (Wiesel 18). In Robert's diary, he notes the songs and poems that were played throughout the camp, each having a special meaning (Swartz 11). Every compound had an orchestra, which allowed the POW to perform songs (Swartz 9). In the book Night, Elie's friend Juliek played his violin in the barracks at Gliewitz for the dead and dying. Elie and his family get removed from their home and transported to concentration camps. He describes this thoughts and feelings as he goes through these events. The death march in Night by Elie Wiesel is started when all the prisoners were forced to leave the camp that they were at and relocate to a new camp. The night was very cold and snowy, and Elie’s foot was already hurt because of some pus that was in it. His only choice was to go on with the march on a hurt foot or stay in the camp and probably die anyways. He decided to go on the march because he wanted to be with his father and he didn’t want to die helplessly. At around six at night, the entire camp lines up in formation and they all started marching block by block.
Night By Elie Wiesel Through his rough time at the concentration camp Elie did his best to keep his hope up. During the book Elie showed hope that kept him motivated to stay alive. In Night by Elie Wiesel it shows hopes keeps the spirit of motivation to stay alive when he was trapped under bodies, kept running/walking to the concentration camp, and keeping his dad alive. Hope was shown when Elie was trapped under bodies; he was motivated by hope to survive. The Holocaust is one of the most horrific events to ever happen during the duration human existence A.D. In the memoir, Night by Elie Wiesel, one reads about a young Jewish boy living in the village of Sighet, Romania. In the process, one gains only a small bit of insight into the horrors that The Holocaust was to its victims. Although one reads about the very explicitly and detailed writings of the camps and the deportation, it's only reading words on a page. It’s impossible to know the pain and suffering that these people went through because of all the terror tactics used by the Nazi party, as well as the abysmal atmosphere that was present at the camps.

Even though most did not live to the liberation there were a few lucky ones who survived and lived to tell about their experiences. Elie Wiesel spent his childhood in Auschwitz concentration camp, surrounded by death and misery, but managed to keep his head up and persevere through it.

It tells about the daily tasks he did in Auschwitz, and those he met in the death camp.
