A Preface to the Reader: The Sovereignty and Goodness of God is a factual captivity narrative of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson. She has authored and narrated her days of captivity by the Narraganset Native Americans for about three months in 1675 during King Philip's (Metacom's) War, in her point of view. The work opens with a preface and introduction and then categorized into twenty removes, which clearly explains the removal of Rowlandson by the group in which she is held captive from place to place. The preface was written by an anonymous Puritan minister Increase Mather. He had provided the motives of the Narragansett’s attack in that preface. Rowlandson clearly describes the Narragansett’s' attack on Lancaster, which took place on February 10, 1675. She says that they arrived at sunrise and killed men, women, and children and burnt houses as they move on. Thirty-seven people were in the Rowlandson battalion or garrison. As the garrison was set on fire, Rowlandson and her children were forced to run away into the gunfire. Rowlandson and her youngest daughter Sarah were injured by the bullets. Her brother-in-law, nephew, and sister all were all killed in the trial. Twelve out of the thirty-seven in the garrison were killed, one escapes, and twelve, including Mrs. Rowlandson and her children, were taken captive. Mrs. Rowlandson was separated from her other two children and taken away with the wounded Sarah she carried. Rowlandson and Sarah were made to spend their first night in a dumped house near the town. When Mrs. Rowlandson asked if she could stay in the house for the night, the Native Americans replied, "What will you love English men still?"- Pg - 8. The Native Americans have told her that they would kill her husband on his return to Lancaster, and her life might be taken at any moment. Under One Roof, Together William Apess’ Eulogy exemplifies the horror bestowed upon Native Americans by colonial settlers down to minutiae, even to quote a “tender-hearted Christian” man upon the sight of King Philip’s remains. The man says, “what a dirty creature he looks like” (302). His assertions throughout such an impressive oration on injustice speak not of sovereignty but of redemption; unlike Drew Lopenzina’s argument that Apess sets out to establish a peaceful, separate nation, I argue that Apess wants rather to make well with the nation that took root in his people’s land. Bondage stories of Americans relate the encounters of whites subjugated by Native Americans and Africans oppressed by early American settlers.
Captivity is defined as the state of being imprisoned or confined. A tragic experience is given a whole new perspective from Louise Erdrich 's poem, “Captivity”. Through descriptive imagery and a melancholic tone, we can see the poem and theme develop in her words. Erdrich takes a quote from Mary Rowlandson’s narrative about her imprisonment by the Native Americans and her response to this brings readers a different story based off of the epigraph. Louise Erdrich compiles various literary devices to convey her theme of sympathy, and her poem “Captivity” through specific and descriptive language brings a whole new meaning to Mary Rowlandson’s narrative.
Although, these eating habits went against Rowlandson’s religious beliefs, she realized that she was willing to eat nearly anything to make it out of captivity alive. Rowlandson’s attitude towards her captors’ food changes drastically over the course of her captivity because she wants to survive. During the colonial period many settlers came to the New World to escape persecution for their Puritan beliefs. Writers such as William Bradford, John Winthrop, Anne Bradstreet, and Mary Rowlandson all shared their experiences and religious devotion throughout their literature that ultimately inspired and influenced settlers to follow. This essay will discuss the similarities in Anne Bradstreet and Mary Rowlandson’s work as they both describe their experiences as signs from God. Anne Bradstreet came to the New World as a devoted Puritan as she repeatedly talked about it in her poetry. In her poems she discusses many tragedies that happened in her life such as; the burning of her house and the death of her two grandchildren all of which she thinks were signs from God.
Lepore found the account of Mary Rowlandson of February 10, 1676 powerful, describing the day Nipmuc come into her town killing everyone and taking people as captives. Lepore found interesting was the concern the English had was that they had lost everything that they had created. After the war when everything was destroyed in a way the colonist no longer owned the land. What the colonists did to make reconcile themselves was to turn to God for an answer on why the war happen. The colonists figured that God had brought this war upon them due to their sins, some colonists believed that God was abandoning them and punishing them.
