One of the events in the history of the anti-slavery fight in the United States that caused the highest number of fatalities was The Nat Turner Rebellion. It was a highly important event that has changed the course of American history and the slavery abolishment. The United States became an entirely other place than it would have been without the rebellion. Thus, there is no wonder that even literature covers this period and these events. The book The Fires of Jubilee written by Stephen B. Oates depicts the atmosphere of trouble and chaos resulting from Nat Turner's rebellion and tells a story of a man who was born as a slave to gain freedom. In this biographic work, the author truthfully captures the spirit of the beginning of 19th century with its anxieties and desires. Thus, this book presents a story of rebellion showing Nat …show more content…
Besides the understanding that he will never get free again, the main reason that caused him to rebel against slavery was the shock after his father's escape to the North and his mother's death. These events together with the fact that he has no right to his life contributed to Nat's visions and dreams that reassured him of the mission that was designed for him. Thus, he waited for a next sign, and once a black spot appeared on the sun in 1831, Nat considered it as a signal to kill all white people which resulted in the bloodiest and most violent revolt of slaves. The book ended with the death of many people, both slaves and whites, whose blood color was the same. In this way, the author shows to which extent the society and the rules existing in it cause its members to commit murders and to calmly perceive the designed division and how those principles might lead even to a person's
Some of these whites were boiling mad and wanted to avenge the atrocities they had found” (99). When Nat and his men killed the White slave owners and their families—the black insurgents made it worse for their fellow slaves that had been left behind. Around 60 whites and 200 blacks were killed during this rebellion. It is hard to see what was accomplished when so many lives were lost. Before Nat is brought to his death he said, “Was not Christ crucified?”
Within Mintz’s book, many brave individuals revealed and their stories told on how they dealt with and overcame slavery. Two courageous men who fought back and rebelled were Nat Turner and Fredrick Douglass. Nat Turner led the Southampton Insurrection in Southampton County, Virginia, in August 1831. Led by Nat Turner, slaves murdered approximately 60 people, the most amount of deaths caused by slaves in any rebellion so far in the South. However, the rebellion was shut down within a matter of two days, but Turner was never caught because he hid soon after the rebellion was shut down.
In The Fires of Jubilee, Stephen Oates describes the events that led to Nat Turner’s rebellion. His goal had been to create a narrative that was realistic and true to the real history behind these events. Upon reading this book, I believe that Oates achieved his goal. He was able to portray the struggles of many slaves during that time, and the fight for the freedom they so much desired.
The Fires of Nat Turner In the book The fires of Jubilee, we notice and go through a lot of Nat Turners violent “rebellion” as a former slave in order to get back at what they have gone through. Nat turner takes a complete different approach than what we saw with our letter from Hammond. Nat Turner with the help of a few other former slaves, have created the highest fatalities during his “rebel” from any slave up rise ever recorded. The book was written from a man who has caught his first ever taste of what freedom was like, which is what initially fueled his need for the rebellion.
Nat Turners Rebellion became monumental for many people of color, he was idolized and respected for his courageous actions. The rebellion created fear that spread through the South, even those in favor for abolishment now wanted stricter laws for slaves. Turner was “recorded on the list of dishonor” for the organization he had lead (“An Address To The Slave Of The united Slaves”). There had been an interview by Thomas R. Gray, defending and slightly sympathizing with Turners actions, many rejected the validation of the interview and felt as if he just wanted “to trick, confuse, and overwhelm the slave’s minds.” (“The Southampton Tragedy”).
Due to Nat’s heroic and incredible actions, he started the beginning of African American
In his confession, Nat goes on to say that as a small child, he would prophesize and tell stories of things that happened before his birth. Amongst all of this stories, Nat’s mother would confirm that the actions indeed happened. Later on in his confession, Nat states that he was called on by the heavens to become a prophet. Within his prophecy days, Nat can be quoted as saying that he was told by the signs of heaven to commence work by slaughtering his enemies with their own weapons. Since he was primarily known as a slave, Nat’s enemies resulted in being the white people/slave owners.
Why did Nat Turner start the rebellion? “To a mind like mine, restless, inquisitive, and observant of everything that was passing, it is easy to suppose that religion was the subject to which it would be directed and, although this subject principally occupied my thoughts, there was nothing that I saw or heard of to which my attention was not directed” (Nat Turner). Nat Turner led the slave rebellion to end slavery, which marked the beginning of the abolition movement. First, Nat Turner was the leader of a violent slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia, in 1831.
In the reading Nat Turner is not portrayed as a hero, but as a crazy slave. As Nat Turner describes the acts he committed he explains them very matter of factly with almost no emotion or remorse. He was an extremely religious man in both the reading and the movie, but in the reading he seems crazy talking about “visions” one included “I discovered drops of blood on the corn as though it were dew from heaven”(10) another being “I then found on the leaves in the woods hieroglyphic characters”(10).Nat Turner believed those were signs that from God that his “purpose” would soon be
The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass shows the imbalance of power between slaves and their masters. In his book, Douglass proves that slavery is a destructive force not only to the slaves, but also for the slaveholders. “Poison of the irresponsible power” that masters have upon their slaves that are dehumanizing and shameless, have changed the masters themselves and their morality(Douglass 39). This amount of power and control in contact with one man breaks the kindest heart and the purest thoughts turning the person evil and corrupt. Douglass uses flashbacks that illustrate the emotions that declare the negative effects of slavery.
All the terrible and inhuman things that Douglass describes are the practical and usual things that happened in his time, they are not extraordinary. His true stories and multiple details from his life give the reader an idea about the effects of slavery on the life of different people in the
The idiosyncratic style Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave by Frederick Douglass depicts the discriminatory actions of postcolonial slave owners in the southern United States, which reflects their greed for unpaid labor on their plantations. He employs the metaphor of the book that their masters prohibited them from owning by law throughout the memoir to demonstrate the avarice that drives white slave owners to turn a darker-skinned, intelligent being into a machine for personal benefit for centuries after the colonization of America. Also, the irony further displays the power of greed by expressing the slaveholder’s uncivilized method of forcing another human out of civilization. Furthermore, his use of a paradox of the use of pure religious beliefs to justify a slaveholder’s inhumane treatment reveals their rapacious actions that contradict the teachings of the church.
While working as a slave Nancy met another slave whose name is not known, but what we are told is that the unknown named man is Nat’s father. As the author continues to tell Nat’s childhood we come to find out that Nat was no ordinary boy. Nat
The Douglass’s Narrative reveals very many things about the lives of the American slaves. The lives of the slaves were very hard. They were treated unfairly treated. American slave women were used for giving birth and having kids against their will. As soon as the slave child was born, they would sell the slave child.
In the book, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass reveals his life as a slave and the valuable lessons he learned from his experience. Douglass wants the truth about slavery to be revealed and wants to eliminate the lies that portray slavery as beneficial. Douglass exposes the reality of slavery by criticizing the “romantic image” of slavery, showing the intellectual capabilities slaves had, and revealing the reasons why slaves were disloyal to each other. Douglass criticizes the southern, romantic image of slavery by exposing the harsh treatment and sadness that slaves endured. It was southerners who thought slavery as beneficial, because it benefited themselves and white society.
