Civil Rights and advancing of racial equality has been a major issue for many, many years and seems to still be today. There are periods of time when the intensity is at a low and periods of time when it seems to be very volatile. Sound our focus be on economic opportunities, as outlined by Booker T. Washington, or for addressing the disfranchisement of African Americans that Charles W. Chesnutt described. A broad educational background, permitting vocational adaptability and flexibility, seems more imperative but then one could argue that you cannot obtain that education without the representation and protection of our civil rights. Can a great education change things. Booker T. Washington believed that economic success for African Americans would take time, and that subordination to whites was a necessary evil until African Americans could prove they were worthy of full economic and political rights. A great education can change economics. A great education change democracies. A great education can change dreams. Honestly, I think Mr. Washington and Mr. Chestnutt both are right. I believe that having an education enables you to obtain knowledge to be successful and have economic worth. “The power of education extends beyond the development of skills we need for economic success. Two significant figures, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois, supported African American progress but took very different approaches to achieve this ultimate goal. To begin with, Booker T. Washington emphasized his ideology that the Black Community needs to concentrate on themself. In "The Atlanta Exposition Address," he urged the Black Community to focus on education, hard work, and to accept discrimination. Also, Dubois believed that investing in one's own business would result in economic progress, proving to Whites that the Black Community is beneficial in economic growth. Washington's message was strong in that he sought to show Whites through personal experience that the Black Community could achieve equality.
Booker T. Washington was born a slave and worked as a janitor to get through school. Whereas W.E.B. Du Bois was born in the North and faced very little discrimination, and had an easier time getting into College. They were well educated, and the only difference between them was how they were raised in different environments. Both were on the journey to improve African American’s social and political status in America. However, they had different methods for getting what they wanted.
These two individuals have varying views on the education of black Americans. Booker T Washington took the view that proper higher education made for the betterment of the black community. He believed that taking pride in one’s race and becoming responsible citizens is what would help the black Americans against the racial discrimination they received. He also helped to create black higher education. The main difference between these two arguments is that one focused on education while the other focused more on social action.
Booker T. Washington is by far one of the brightest and strongest minds from his time. During his Atlanta Exposition address he displays his intellect masterfully. From Mr. Washington’s use of language he was able to seamlessly piece together a speech that we still analyse to this day. Mr. Washington use of rhetoric explains and enlightens the circumstances of freed African Americans trying to fit into communities in the south. From mistreatment and racism still present in the newly freed people.
The author stated that we cannot turn the block back to 1868 when the Amendment was adopted, or even to 1896 when Plessy V. Ferguson was written. We must consider public education in the light of its full development and its present place in American life throughout the nation”. I agree with that author because after all those court cases happening history should not be repeated. Author argues on how American could incorporate the equality among the Black and White students. Round three of this court case was about understanding this problem, and how the decisions that were made are going to be successfully put into practice.

Jupiter Hammon who was considered as the first published Black writer in America, he published his first poem named, “An Evening Thought: Salvation by Christ with Penitential Cries”in 1761. Through his poem, he implemented the idea of a gradual emancipation as a way to end slavery.
The Impact of Booker T. Washington Booker T. Washington was a man with highs standards a great work ethic and he was one of the most respected African Americans of his time. Born to a slave on a plantation in Hale’s Ford, Virginia, Booker T. knew from a young age the importance of a good education. Booker T is mostly known for his part in founding the Tuskegee Institute in 1881 along with George Washington Carver and Lewis Adams. Booker T. Washington was undoubtedly one of the most respected African Americans of his time. His values and beliefs established an imperative relationship with spiritual and political leaders of his time.

Achieving African American Equality Booker T. Washington and W.E.B Du Bois were two of the most influential advocates for African American equality during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (Blatty, 1). Although both men ultimately had the same goal, their methods for achieving African American equality were remarkably different. To begin, the men had conflicting ideas about what constituted as African American equality. Booker T. Washington argued that the accumulation of wealth and the ability to prove that Blacks were productive members of society would be the mark of true equality for African Americans (Painter, 155).
However Booker T. Washington believed in having a more skillful education, consisting of learning how to trade, mastering agriculture skills and more things one would need to get a job. However, W.E.B DuBois also put many efforts to achieve equal rights towards African Americans which Booker T Washington put on hold. Booker T Washington’s plan was to make it so that “Blacks would [have to] accept segregation and discrimination but their eventual acquisition of wealth and culture would gradually win for them the respect and acceptance of whites”. This vision that Booker T Washington had “practically accepts the alleged inferiority of the Negro race”. W.E.B commented on this process saying it was an attempt, “to educate black boys and girls simply as servants and underlings.”

There are a few ways that Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. DuBois differ in their strivings for racial equality. The reason that these men differ in their views are pretty apparent and go back to the separate arguments that Jane Addams and Elizabeth Cady Stanton produced for women's rights in the 19th century. Jane Addams made some compromises in her push for women's suffrage to make her argument easier to swallow and take a small step towards equality. Stanton puts out her whole argument for total equality which made her argument hard for her generation to accept, but got all the problems on the table.
As American society grows and develops, education changes right along with it. During the foundation of the education system, citizens did not view educating children to read and write as significant and instead focused on teaching them how to work at home or on the farm. While these teachings are important, the government realized all children need to be exposed to a proper education where they learn basic human skills in order to have a functioning society. The process of guaranteeing an education for all children in America was lengthy; however, by the twentieth century attending school became compulsory. Even though school became required for all children by the 1900’s, the quality and accessibility of a proper education was still a struggle for minorities in America.
(Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Thus said, being educated and smart is something everyone can do and college helps with that. Likewise, college can make someone more educated and happier.
As Americans, we view the Constitution as a stepping stone to making the great country we live in today. Yet, we the people of the United States failed to realize another component in order to form a perfect union. Which is to establish and promote equal opportunities for a quality education for all. However, we live in a society where social locators such as class, gender, and race are huge factors in the determination of one’s educational future.
