¨Even when our heart aches, we summon the strength that maybe we didn't even know we had, and we carry on; we finish the race. ¨ Boston was devastated when the bombing occurred during the Boston Marathon. Obama´s speech conveys the message that Boston is strong, brave, determined and not to let terrorism destroy our city and people. In the speech the message portrayed to the country is not to be afraid and how as a country we can pull together after a heartbreaking occurrence is conveyed through a variety of literary strategies. Literary devices are used in everything we read and the speech given after the Boston marathon bombing by the President of the United States concentrates on colloquial and dialogue.

Diction is the use of words and phrases in a speech or writing. Diction can be defined as a style of speaking or writing that is established by the use of words. Diction or choice of words separates good writing from bad writing. “Every one of us has been touched by this attack on your beloved city. Every one of us stands with you. Because, after all, it's our beloved city, too. Boston may be your hometown but we claim it, too. It's one of America's iconic cities. It's one of the world's great cities. And one of the reason(s), the world knows Boston so well is that Boston opens its heart to the world.” The use of diction is demonstrated not only in this section of the speech but throughout its entire. The speech uses carefully scripted words and sentences to pull at a reader’s emotions and to ensure that all of us together as a nation will be strong for one another. Furthermore, the speech incorporates stories about victims of the bombing, a flashback of the President’s past visits to Boston and the strength of prayer to ensure listeners and readers that I feel your pain and your country feels your pain. Some examples of words that stress the ongoing message of the speech are; prayers, in the face of…, we race, and love.
The proper usage of words is imperative to convey the message to the audience. Using the help of literary devices or strategies assist a writer in the process of ensuring their meaning is interpreted the correct way. The wrong combination of words can effortlessly divert readers or listeners which could result in misinterpretation of the message behind the speech. .
