The main purpose of the film is to explain how Brenton Butler was an innocent teenager charged with the murder of Mary Ann Stephens. The filmmaker accomplished this purpose by showing how the law enforcement incorrectly investigated the murder of Mary Ann Stephens. The filmmaker purpose was clearly stated because the filmmaker provided sufficient amount of evidence about how the investigation was not handled correctly. This was shown throughout the film and this proved that Brenton Butler was an innocent teenager being charged with murder. The filmmaker purpose was learned throughout the whole semester. In class we have learned how juveniles are not treated right in the justice system and how the juvenile justice system has failed to protect the rights of juveniles. I couldn’t believe they were going to charge him with murder just because of one eyewitness. I was disappointed that law enforcement didn’t bother getting a search warrant for his house or even talk to his family. I couldn’t believe Michael Glove beat Brenton just to get him to confess because Michael just wanted to end the case. Also, if law enforcement would have just got the purse and check for fingerprints then everything would have been handled differently. Instead, they thought it was easier to charge him with murder and ruin a fifteen year old life. This film demonstrated a lot of the issues we have learned throughout the semester. This film showed how the procedures in the justice system need to be addressed because law enforcement make a lot of mistakes when they do not follow the producers correctly. The mistakes law enforcement made in this film demonstrated how a person is either innocent or guilty depending the way law enforcement does their job. Overall, this was a great film demonstrating the mistakes the justice system
