Brenton Butler Film Analysis

The film is about how a sixteen years old named Cyntoia Brown is charged with murder and robbery of a forty-three years old man named Johnny Allen. Eventually she was convicted to life in prison for those crimes. I will describe what the video detailed and how this is related to previous classwork. Also, I will provide criticism of the video. Cyntoia was a teenager that grew up hard.

These studies also show that a great deal of teenagers who commit serious felonies have a severe psychological illness. Instead of getting the help, teenagers are forced into adult prisons without getting the mental help they desperately need. The author chose to write this article to advocate for the teens that are tried as adults when there is a juvenile court system. He uses Greg as an example of a teenager who was tried as an adult committing murder. He uses Greg to represent the other teenagers in the adult system who have committed a serious felony similar to his.

Because of a new documentary series, O.J. has found the media bringing the spotlight back to him again. In the latest FX documentary series, light gets shed on the O.J. Simpson murder trial and possible theories about it. While no one knows the real truth about the night of the murder, one doctor believes Simpson could be a victim of encephalopathy, a brain disease that occurs as a result of brain injury. As a result, he could not control his impulses.

The movie also does a good job of depicting the subjective concerns of police brutality. It shows how different segments of society view police brutality differently, and how this can lead to a lack of understanding and empathy for those affected. The movie portrays the frustration and anger that many African Americans feel towards the justice system and the police force, and it highlights the need for

Everyone makes mistakes. Whether it’s accidental, like taking an item without paying at the store, or purposeful, like robbing someone at gunpoint. Subsequently, every action comes with a consequence. However, these consequences can be too extreme or unfair. These unfortunate occurrences are happening in our juvenile justice system.

In most instances the juveniles who are arrested for crimes are either at the wrong place at the wrong time or usually with a group of people who are doing the crimes. After a twelve-hour interrogation, Brenton Butler confessed to the murder of Mary Ann Stephens. A key claim made by the defense attorneys in this case was that this was a false confession, and after reaching a verdict of not guilty, the jury clearly agreed. The factors that led the false confession were laid out in a scene during the documentary. Instead of using the interview to discover the truth, the interrogators specifically sought out a confession from the suspect. They began the interrogation with the presumption that Brenton Butler was guilty.

To address the American justice system, the filmmaker utilizes the movie as a means of communication. The film exposes injustices in the legal system, where people are frequently wrongfully accused due to fake witnesses or mistaken identification. In the documentary “When Kids Get Life” by Ofra Bikel we see five men who were sentenced to life in prison for committing crimes in their teens. We hear the stories of how it happened, why it happened, and what life is like for them today. This documentary sheds light on the battle that juveniles face when they commit crimes and the judicial system. This documentary relates heavily in the material we learn because although it is about teenagers who receive life in prison, the judicial system plays a key role.

The juvenile justice system has made numerous of ethical issues when managing juvenile offenders. The issue with the juvenile justice system is the laws and rules that govern it. It has led to years of controversial debate over the ethical dilemmas of the juvenile corrections system, and how they work with youth offenders. The number of minors entering the juvenile justice system is increasing every month. The reasons why the juvenile justice system faces ethical dilemmas is important and needs to be addressed: (1) a vast proportion of juveniles are being tried and prosecuted as adults; (2) the psychological maturation of the juvenile to fully comprehend the justice system; and (3) the factors that contribute to minorities being adjudicated in the juvenile justice system are more likely than White offenders.

Lastly, the criminal justice process or the legal consequences that the criminals face are right but not necessarily fair because occasionally the process supports corruption. In other words, the criminals and drugs dealers in the movie do not face the right legal consequences because the criminal justice process including the judges is corrupt. I was assigned to watch two films outside of class in criminology for this assignment. I have not ever been assigned to watch a film for any of my classes outside of class. So I thought to myself, this is going to be one of my least favorite assignments I have ever done. Can you imagine waking up behind closed walls and bars? Waking up to see your inmate who is a 45-year-old bank robber and you are a 14-year-old minor who made a big mistake. This is why minors who have committed crimes should not be treated the same as adults. Some reasons are because the consequences given to minors in adult court would impact a minor’s life in a negative way. If a minor is tried through a juvenile court, they have a greater chance of rehabilitation.
