Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, is a story about Melinda Sordino. Melinda was an incoming freshman at Merryweather High, and was entering ninth grade with no friends. During the first school assembly, the new girl in town, Heather, introduced herself to Melinda, sparking somewhat of a friendship. Melinda also came across her ex-best friend, Rachel. Rachel had mouthed the words “I hate you” to Melinda, even though all she wanted to do was to tell Rachel what really happened at the infamous summer party.

Todd Beamer was a great person for what he did and he was very selfless. Todd Beamer was born in Flushing Michigan and he went to Wheaton Christian High School. He played baseball, basketball, and soccer. He went to Fresno State University and majored in physical therapy. Beamer transferred Wheaton College and majored in medicine before deciding to do business.

On July 20th 2005, tragedy struck which changed author Kimberley William’s life for years to come. Her son, Caleb Williams, went down to the Snoqualmie River and plummeted nearly 20 feet from a rope swing to the rocks below which caused a traumatic brain injury. The months following the accident tested the patience and faith of the family as Caleb lay in a comatose state. Although he lay in this state of unconsciousness for months, the family relied on God who continuously displayed his omnipotence in the healing process. When tragedy strike, believers need to persevere and continue relying on God, even when it feels like the whole world is caving in.

The movie Entertaining Angels follows the life and journey of Dorothy Day and how she changed from an atheist to a Catholic. The movie begins with a quote from Dorothy Day about her looking for the abundant life but not knowing how to find it. At first, Dorothy thinks she can find completeness in communism and protest for rights, but she gets pregnant and has an abortion. She then discovers the church and converts from an Atheist to a Catholic. Many times in the movie Dorothy is confused and looking for God’s help.

Dorothy Day 's legacy is still present to this day. From her journalism to the Catholic Worker Movement she still helps the people who need it. Although her life before converting to Catholicism was almost the opposite of leading a perfect example, her past shows that it is not impossible to change your ways. Dorothy Day is a Servant of God who focused on helping the poor.

Life certainly threw her tough challenges in the forms of OCD (obsessive compulsion disorder), scrupulosity, and anorexia. . To say the least, she looked for the devil in every detail believing if she didn’t do something perfect someone would get hurt. Traig begins her book by recounting a memory where scrupulosity took over. Being a form of OCD, scrupulosity makes its “victims” have an obsession with religion, in Jenny’s case her obsession was Judaism.

Faith is a significant part of one’s daily life. Everyone endures moments in their life in which situations challenge one’s religious beliefs. In Elie Wiesel’s short novel he bears an immense amount of hardships throughout the Holocaust that test his religious faith. As a young adult, Elie was just beginning to venture into his religious beliefs discovering his personal values and faith; but as he began that journey the German soldiers infiltrated his village. His whole village was soon transported to Auschwitz and divided up between camps.

What if someone unexpected changed your way of thinking, permanently? What if God chose to send someone into your life to abolish you superficial thoughts? In both the stories “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, by Flannery O’Connor, and “Cathedral”, by Raymond Carver, the authors create main characters who lack faith and think superficially about life. However, in both stories, the authors send unexpected characters to act like mediums, for their job is to be the connection of the main character’s initial position in faith and their final position, revealed at the end of both stories. Even though the stories have a different plot and involve diverse kinds of characters, the final message and moral is the same.
