In the book, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, we were brought into a different type of storytelling. It is just like lasagna; as we read along the book and reflect upon the story being presented, we uncover the different layers hidden in this book. First, we think it as the author, Junot Diaz portrayed the story to us. Then as we get into the fourth chapter, we understood that the book was actually written by one of characters in the book who is close friend to Oscar’s family. As we finishing the book, we came to a different understanding. This story book was done by a group effort because when Yunior, the actual narrator of the book, tell us the story of in such details that it is impossible for him to know all those details without the …show more content…
It is just a story. How can Oscar’s death be the first step of ending the curse that has been with the family for decades. First, let’s take a look at all the people mentioned in this book that was cursed. When Beli was in school, in her English class, the English teacher let the students write about what they expect to happen during the next decade. One boy wrote about how much he wished that the country could be democratic. The next day, both the student and the teacher disappeared. Then, we learned how Beli messed up with Trujillo’s family but managed to survive. We also learned that Beli’s parents were cursed by Trujillo, too. Everyone who was close to her father were dead including his mistress, and his two beautiful daughters. It is as if the curse is with the family as long as there are still living members. (for these part, instead of describing everything, try to use some quotes) Beli was the first generation that survived the curse. She was not dead, but she had to suffer everyday as long as she is still alive. We could interpret this as, the curse will wipe out the family immediately. And for the ones who “luckily” survived had to live a life as hell. For the living members, the curse kept them alive. For example, Oscar tried to kill himself, but
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz layers storytelling and meaning into its plot, with plenty of underlying messages, if the reader is willing to hunt for them a bit. From the relationships between similar characters like Lola and Beli to polar opposites like Yunior and Oscar, the reader sees different relationship and friendship dynamics play out and how such relationships are affected and looked upon by society. Oscar is a lonely, fantasy loving nerd who does not have much of a life, while Yunior has that machismo aspect that is focused on heavily in the story, from start to finish. In the story, Yunior and Oscar are both going to the same college, but Yunior has been rejected from every other residence, and when Lola asks a favor of Yunior to watch her brother Oscar, he gladly accepts since he has nowhere else to turn to. In The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Diaz uses Yunior
In other words, Diaz’s voice is heard throughout the short story and one can see that ending it is not an arguable despite but many other situations could arise from it. “Hide the pictures of yourself with an Afro,” (Diaz 235) “Shower, comb, dress. Sit on the couch and watch TV” (Diaz 235). The narrator might show himself as perfect with getting ready but he knows that his actions are hopeless and will be negatively reflected throughout the rest of the short
2. This passage from Junot Diaz’s Brief Wondrous life of Oscar Wao is significant because it initiates the growing tension between Oscar and his love for comic books. Oscar is fascinated by the idea of superheroes which developed his interest to write comic books. Oscar only had a wish to have a girlfriend, but the fact that Oscar’s love for comic books and sci-fi animes was not allowing him to have a girlfriend. These comic books and animes in a way distract him from seeing that what is happening in the world which makes him ill-informed about the world.
What a Dictator Wants vs. What a Dictator Does Not Want What silence is to a reigning dictator, corruption is to government officials. When citizens are in fear they tend to be silent and never lash out at their rulers as great or fatal consequences can result. On the other hand, silence can stir up resistance to the power of a dictator ending their rule. In the book, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz, the setting takes place in the Dominican Republic where the crude dictator Trujillo rules and installs fear in his people. Trujillo does as he pleases and has many personal "eye witnesses" to back him up if needed.
Oscar is a kind-hearted and intelligent man, but no one wants to talk or be friends with him. Reason being, the curse of the fuku that has been inherited by his family from his grandparents, has negatively impacted his social life as well as, his overall lifestyle as a young man. Many believe that the fuku is the
The novel may change people’s attitudes towards life and make it more enjoyable. Everlasting life is something most people want to have, for the number one fear in the world is death. However, seeing some of the suffering the Tucks endured can change negative views on life or death. For example, Angus Tuck is miserable and bored. He would give anything to be in heaven, and we saw this in his dream.
The Gangster who falls under the spell of Beli’s physique does not truly love her as she did him. To him she was an escape “Life it seemed had struck the Gangster a dolorous blow and he was uncertain as to how to respond… which might explain why, when he met Beli, he jumped on her stat. I mean what straight middle aged brother has not attempted to regenerate himself through the alchemy of young p---y. And if what she has often said to her daughter was true , Beli had some of the
The demonstration of the narrator's imagination unconsciously leads his own thoughts to grow into a chaotic mess that ultimately ends in a death. By murdering, it’s his own way of finding peace. He is portrayed as being a sadist, sick man with an unnatural obsession for
Over the course of this book, characters gain and lose hope, from Candy losing his dog and with him his hope, to George getting convinced that they will make it to their paradise only to throw it away when he loses Lennie. With these tragedies these men lost sight of tomorrow. Therefore they have begun their first death, but where there is hope there is not only the capability to continue on after tragedies like these occur, but also the mindset it takes to heal the pain that comes after overcoming difficult
From the brief passage from the story, you can see how many bad decisions are being made and how they are adding up, leading towards the tragic end. As can see from reading, the
Child’s Play, written by Higuchi Ichiyo, is a short novel centred around the growth of children, particularly those associated with the pleasure quarters. The story takes place over a few days, nevertheless, we are given an idea on the backgrounds of the three main characters, Shōta, Midori, and Nobu, and watch them gradually lose their childlike innocence. Although not explicitly stated, the last three paragraphs suggest that all three protagonists have followed the footsteps of their parents and in Midori’s case, her older sister. This essay discusses the impending tragic future of children who are destined to take after the occupations of their family.
He interacts with his family and he is seen as a good father, friend, and son. Oscar is a person people can relate to and is someone that you see be loyal and a good person, regardless of his race, which he was identified by and then brutally, attacked for. The use of mise-en-scene in the opening clip of the film with the actual footage of what happened at the Fruitvale Station foreshadows how the film is going to end. This creates your feelings to grow as that the end of the film approaches that makes you not want Oscar to go to the train station because you know how it is going to end. The film started how it was going to end, but starting with the actual footage of the situation makes you pay more attention throughout the movie on why Oscar is more than just the stereotype that follows his race, and you don’t want him to have to go through that scenario because you have seen Oscar be more than what was assumed of him by the police.
The tale is very interesting because it does not follow the path of only one
It’s a story that tells about everything from “guks” (nations) during the Korean war, the difficulties in that time, bad decisions in our life, crime, mistakes, love and hate, mother care, being “retarded” in the eyes of the others and its feeling, diary to different tastes from vanilla to chocolate, timing, etc. After reading the book I was so sad after one point, but happy at the same time that somewhere we have people who can help us like many other people trying to protect Jimmy who was disabled, couldn’t move and speak as a normal person. He was one of the main characters and he lived a life in which he didn’t believe there would be the notion of “bad person or badness”, all he knew was the World is full of kindness as her mother treated and cared for him in a way like this; he was the symbol of innocence for me in this story. But, not everyone lives a life full of the good things, he was pure but he died very quickly while he was really young which I felt like real good people leave this life quickly compared to others. In a Christmas night he lost his euphoria when he was a baby, the second time was his real death while he was yelling at his best friend riding his favorite bicycle.
Mostly what I got from the story was that everyone is responsible for their actions. Truth is, all of us can do such cruel things which we sometimes don’t even mean to say or to do, but we can all think back on times or reflect when, for one reason or another we behaved badly. This novel will also serve as a lesson to those people who think of committing suicide. Why do they keep on hiding themselves in the deepest dark?
