In any facet of life, whether it is in a relationship, at work, or in school; teamwork plays a critical role in conflict resolution and inevitably success. William James once said, “A chain is no stronger than its weakest link, and life is after all a chain”, regardless of the fact that this notion may hold true for many circumstances in life, it especially holds true with respect to a sports team. From football, to basketball and even soccer, the might of a team working together determines the outcome of any given circumstance. In most cases, there will always be difficult team members, and for the sake of argument, such members are deemed the “weakest” link of a team. In 1965, Bruce Tuckman proposed the “forming–storming–norming–performing” model of group development, of which encompasses the chronological phases necessary and inevitable for a team to grow, problem solve, and perform to its highest capacity (Tuckman, 1965). The first phase, forming, is the initial step in a team’s development that inevitably determines whether or not the team will experience success or failure in their future endeavors. The forming phase, much like its name suggests, encompasses the first instances of a teams meeting where plans regarding their task are discussed and agreed upon. In the “Remember the Titans” video, this stage is depicted by all of the members of the football team coming together for the first time, and eventually meeting their coach. Storming is the second phase in effective team building, and it is also a point in which many disputes between team members can arise. In the “Remember the Titans” video clip, tension among team members was quite evident and primarily racially driven. Moreover, the performing phase taken at face value goes much further than to imply that a team is simply just playing the game. Any individual on a team can perform, but the success of a team is determined by its ability to perform efficiently as a group. This idea seemed to form the basic message that the “Building a Cohesive Team” video was attempted to construe. Further, the author of that video also stressed the importance of competent leadership and the role it serves in forming an effective and cohesive team. With respect to a sports team, leadership roles are quite diverse, albeit the head coach remains at the top of the chain. The head coach’s primary objective is to set the boundaries of conduct he deems acceptable, as well as to set the standard of performance he expects all team members to perform. It is a game that involves many aspects of the human body physically and psychologically. The game involves not one but eleven players on the field for each side.
This caused friction and discourse in the player and coaching environment with even fights breaking out. The Titans had to overcome these challenges and learn to work together as a team, regardless of their race. Through his leadership and guidance, Coach Boone succeeded in uniting the team and instilling a sense of discipline and respect. This was demonstrated throughout the film through two main players on the team, Julius Campbell and Gerry Bertier.
INTRO A variety of leadership styles were displayed within the film, Remember the Titans, and it was apparent that transformational and servant leadership were the most effective styles of eliminating discrimination and encouraging growth as a team. Nevertheless, the film was a wonderful example of Tuckman’s (Tuckman's Theory: Five Stages of Team Development, 2021) theory: Five Stages of Team Development which is important to capturing the concepts and the functionality of servant leadership. At the start of the movie we are taken back to 1971 where we are introduced to the town of Alexandria in Virginia and the new high school that resides in it, as two schools recently combined to form one desegregated student body called T.C. He is team captain, passionate about everything he does and wants the best for not only the team as a whole but also the players as individuals.
The desire to win in leadership sets a context where true beneficial aspects and lessons are learnt and taught. The lessons cover ethical principles and aspects of responsibility, respect, caring, fairness, and trustworthiness. These styles are based on the film Remember the Titans.’ The backdrop in the film presents itself in football and racism which are the aspects that clash with the leadership styles. Coach Herman Boone’s leadership styles manifest themselves based on his upbringing which provides a tough exterior.
Have you ever felt like you don't belong even though it's where you are supposed to be? In the film Remember the Titans the director Boaz Yakin’s shows how the football team felt that same way. Yakins showed how they got over it throughout coming together to build a community, through unity, acceptance, and through self-fulfillment. When the titans built their sense of community all the team players showed a different side to the other teammates, as the team was becoming more accepted and the team started to feel self-fulfilled. With the Titans working on coming together during training camp a sense of community is already being established as the team must find a way to work together.

Leaders are artists, remaining flexible and adaptable in order to conform to any certain situation. In FM 6-22, leadership is defined as, “the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization”. The vast majority of successful Army leaders exemplify this definition in their everyday life. So, what exactly does this process involve?
There are many ways in which group dynamics resonate in this film. Group work can foster connections and provide an opportunity /for group members to feel bonded. The Titans football team is a task group; the ultimate role of the group is to have the players come together as one unit. However, there are critical group dynamics that threaten the team’s ability to function properly.
Unity is the act of joining to create a whole; This is the most important concept in this movie. To achieve everything that the Titans football team accomplished, all of the players had to unite. Whether they liked it or not, uniting and respecting each other was crucial in order to achieve success, especially since teamwork is necessary in football to coordinate and communicate with each other. Near the beginning of the film, Head Coach Boone says the same thing to his summer football camp on the field of Gettysburg: "I don't care if you like it or not, but you will respect each other, and maybe we'll learn to play this game like men." After this lecture, most of the athletes started making an attempt at cooperating, and their games gradually improved.
Sports leaders have position power over all players. However, the role of a sports leader is much more encompassing than being a good judge of a player’s ability. This implies that a leader should treat each player with the respect he/she deserves. Moreover, different leadership techniques apply to different players. As is the case with workers of varying strengths and weaknesses, sports leaders also need to flex their leadership style and practice the teachings of situational leadership.
