Brutus Caesar Rhetorical Analysis

Ambition alone is seen as something to fear. However, ambition and power are a dangerous combination. Unfortunately, this combination is seen in Brutus when he kills Caesar and tries to convince the Plebians to side with him and the conspirators. However, with ambition and power comes actions without the thought of consequences. Brutus forgot this when Mark Antony persuaded the Plebians through a speech full of manipulative and creative rhetoric during Caesar's memorial.

Many people talk at funerals for different reasons. In Julius Caesar, Antony and Brutus, Caesar’s murderers talk at Caesar’s funeral. Antony and Caesar compete for likings at Caesar’s funeral. They both use rhetorical devices to try to prove their point. Antony and Brutus utilize the rhetorical devices in order to enhance their speeches and persuade the plebeians, however Antony’s speech clearly surpasses Brutus’.

The speech Marc Antony delivered has an immense impact on the minds of the citizens in Rome through the influence of devices, language, and details. While using a manipulative and powerful tone, he manages to sway a whole crowd while hiding his intentions of revenge and maintaining a neutral ground throughout the entirety of his monologue.

Meanwhile, Cassius and Brutus get into a big argument at their first meeting after the funeral. Cassius has been accepting bribes on the side. On the other hand, the only reason Brutus agreed to join the conspiracy was that he believed killing Caesar was for the greater good. The two enemy factions exchange some words, and Brutus claims he's not a traitor. During the fight, Cassius kills himself over a misunderstanding, which he thought his friend Titinius had been overtaken by enemy hordes.

The Tragedy of Julius Caesar- Rhetorical Analysis In the novel, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by Shakespeare, after Brutus brutally executes Caesar in Act 3 Scene 2, Antony is allowed to give a speech to the people of Rome whom have seen witnessed this fatal tragedy in Scene 3. Antony uses anaphora, connotative diction and details throughout his speech to persuade the Romans to change their perspective of Caesar and Brutus. The way Antony speaks about both Caesar & Brutus are a dispute of what he is actually trying to announce to the Romans. At the end of his speech, Antony hopes to reach the Romans emotionally (pathos) by enraging them against Brutus’s false statements against Caesar.

Antony’s manipulative mindset allows him to easily play mind games with the conspirators and emotionally manipulate plebeians to fall right into his traps. His manipulative mindset gives Antony a substantial upper hand against the conspirators. When encountering the conspirators with bloody hands near Caesar's dead body and listening to Brutus's explanation of why they had killed Caesar, Antony states that “[He] doubt[s] not of [the conspirators] wisdom. Let each man render [him] [their] bloody hand.” (III.i.183-184).

This justifies the use of rhetorical questions as an acceptable, rational persuasion technique. Immediately after this rhetorical question, Cassius uses compare and contrast by comparing Brutus to Caesar by saying, “Write them together, yours is as fair a name; / Sound them, it doth become the mouth as well” (1.2.48-51). By claiming that Brutus and Caesar both have “fair” names and that the names both “sound” equally honorable, Cassius highlights a clear comparison between Brutus and Caesar. The similarities between the two are emphasized by Cassius in order to persuade Brutus that he is equally as important as Caesar, and should not allow Caesar to establish his own tyrannical state.

In William Shakespeare’s tragedy Julius Caesar, Mark Antony uses rhetorical devices such as paralipsis, rhetorical questions, and verbal irony in his speech to the plebeians in order to plot them against the conspirators. During his speech to the plebians, Antony uses paralipsis in order to kindle curiosity and interest in the audience. Antony mentions to the plebians that he had Caesar’s will with him but tells them, “Have patience, gentle friends, I must not read it; It is not meet you know how much Caesar loved you” (3.2.152-153). By drawing attention to Caesar’s will, something Antony desperately wants to show the plebeians, but then dismissing the idea of reading it, Antony uses a type of verbal irony called paralipsis. Julius Caesar lived around 100 BC to 44 BC. In his early life he had great ambitions to lead Rome into another Golden age but like all dreams, you have to put in the work to get there. So at an early age he joined the Roman Army to gain more knowledge about the battlefield. While in the army, Julius had much praise because he had saved his comrade. When Julius left the army he thought that it would be better if he went to Italy to increase his intellect and his rhetorical skills.

Rhetoric in the Speeches of Brutus and Antony The death of Caesar is a controversial topic and was even more controversial at the time of his funeral when when senators were trying to benefit from his death by getting the Roman citizens on their side. At Caesar’s funeral, two senators gave speeches as an attempt to get the roman people on their side. Out of the two speeches, Marc Antony’s speech was more effective because of his use of appeals and biases, being 100% true and had a larger variety of rhetorical devices.

In the play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar one of the main characters Caesar is killed in Scene 3 act 2.Then Brutus and Antony both give speeches about how bad they feel. Brutus gives a good speech by using all three of the rhetorical appeals to persuade the crowd to want to listen to what he say by using logos,ethos,pathos to his advantage. Brutus gives a better speech that draws the audience attention,Antony not as much. Therefor here are some very valid points on why Brutus’s speech used the Rhetorical Appeals better.

Antony discusses the economic dominance and vigor that Caesar brought to Rome, and with sarcasm he states, “Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?” (3.2.99).

Brutus fled his country where he eventually killed himself. While Brutus experiences an impactful turning point, Cassius ' actions and personality remain fairly constant within the negative traits.
