The persona portrayed by Dubner and Levitt in their novel Freakonomics is that of an unconventional Economist. Levitt’s introduction includes the quote "Morality, it could be argued, represents the way that people would like the world to work, whereas economics represents how it actually does work." (Levitt 13). This quote details an important distinction that characterizes the rest of Levitt's analysis. As an economist, he studies how the world actually functions, which tends to include deviations from what may be considered the moral.

However, philosophy does not always have the right answer; which makes people avoid the concept of philosophy. A true philosopher would relish the challenge of debating their beliefs. He or she would state that philosophy has created the sciences (Russel, 14). No natural science would have been made possible if there was not someone questioning an event.

The purpose of this essay is to argue whether "economics is a friend or a foe of ethics". A concept discussed by Norman Bowie, A.K Gavai and Milton Friedman. Before moving into further detail, what is economics and ethics all about? According to the dictionary, "economics is the science that deals with the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services or the material welfare of human kind." Whereas ethics are the "values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and ends of such actions".

In conclusion, the characteristics of the scientific method are far from few. Most distinctly, science deals with the uncertainty of the unknown, attempting to make it known. The book is well-written and engaging and the authors definitely do a good job of explaining complex economic concepts in a way that is easy to understand. The book provides a helpful overview of the history of capitalism and its basic principles. The authors also offer practical advice on how to integrate Christian values into business practices and the book is somewhat one-sided in its defense of capitalism.

Philosophy is the act of stepping out the workaday world. Is having time just for your self to think and analyze things. People withdraw from the currently accepted meaning of something and think beyond what they already know.
