KSCS has trained social workers that reaffirms the richness, productivity and vigor of the lives of African Americans, Africans, and people of color and marginalized and oppressed people in other parts of the world and emphasizes the delineation of ways in which the strengths of African Americans can be used to respond to oppressive and discriminatory systems. Thus, the staffs is uniquely prepared to engage and work with diverse black populations, they are equally readied to work with all other populations, particularly those that have experienced oppression and
Advocating for services for the youth has been a priority since the beginning of my internship. Finding services outside the Panhandle Promise Project by contacting other agencies and services to meet our clients’ needs. Working in the program also exposed me to a new type of population, the children with incarcerated parents. It also provided me with new knowledge about their specific needs and the services that could benefit help a child become a value member in society, but during this time it became evident to me that my lack of knowledge about the effects of incarceration of the parents could have in a child. The Code of Conduct and the NASW Code of Ethics influence the social work profession as well as my own personal values.
In order to move forward, the African-American community must heal. As an activist and aspiring social worker, I
“There are other ways that you can give back to the community” his audience is not at all limited to just black people but instead everyone. Who is the author speaking to? Macsi opens up his article to all races and all supports he does this by saying that you do not need to be in direct relation with black middle class workers in order to create change. The article brings in ethos with the use of many creditable workers, and researchers who deal with racial discrimination and affirmative acion programs. Their voice is heard through Macsi
Plessy v. Ferguson (1896, 163 US 537) For centuries people of African descent have suffered of inhumane treatment, discrimination, racism, and segregation. African Americans in South Carolina have faced systemic oppression and discrimination throughout history, including slavery, segregation, and institutionalized racism. This has shaped the state's society, culture, and identity. The experiences of African Americans in South Carolina have been marked by struggle, resistance, and perseverance. Learning about this history is not only important for understanding
By “acknowledging and recognizing, confronting, and addressing pervasive racism within social work practice at the individual, agency, and institutional level, and promote culturally competent social work interventions and research methodologies in the areas of social justice, well-being, and cost-benefit outcomes.” (Blank, 2013) The NASW supports cultural competence, which means people of different culture, class, background, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, religion, physical, and mental abilities, and anything among those areas are protected in a way because racism or any type of discrimination is not tolerated at any level whatsoever. One thing for sure is we do have to recruit a more diverse group of professionals. They need more of a diverse population according to a study done.
The Drug Treatment Alternative-to-Prison Program is another attempt to provide better treatment for people who are convicted. The study showed that drug offenders who underwent a treatment program outside of prison had a 26 percent less rate of re-arrest after two years than a control group that was sent to prison (Justice Policy Institute, 2010). Rehabilitative programs like the Second Chance Act and the Drug Treatment Alternative-to-Prison Program has shown to growth and positive
Modern social workers are frequently tasked with certain objectives by their agencies, which leave little room for any work beyond specific treatments and timeframes (Gitterman & Knight, 2016). Although social workers are bound to the set of ethics put forth by the NASW, practitioners are often limited to focusing on the issues of the individual rather than the larger societal issues that may be behind those concerns. Additionally, many social work students end up working in direct practice, rather than macro work. There is a need for social workers to engage at the macro level in order to facilitate community organization and empowerment. Critics suggest this theory may not take into account the unique experiences of each individual and perhaps key characteristics of the individual or group are not taken into consideration (Sadan, 1997).
Anti-oppressive practice is also an approach of work in the social work that gives great emphasis to social change, empowerment, and partnership. Through anti-oppressive practice the problem of the individual is seen in a greater context: the individual, cultural, and societal and structural aspects are taken into consideration in the understanding of the problem and in its potential solutions. (Thompson 2002) developed the PCS model in other to fully grasp the full understanding of the individual, cultural and society which should influence the way social workers work with people of Black and ethnic minority and other oppressed groups. Intervention in the lives of the client should not only take place at the personal level but also cultural and structural in many cases all this level are interwoven. Power and Empowerment
Social work is a career that I have recently become interested in pursuing. I spent many years with misconceptions concerning the sector. However, following three years of working close by these experts, I have picked up a more profound comprehension of the significance of the work. I am especially interested in working in child welfare along with terminally ill children. I have got to a stage in my career where I have started to search out instruction that will make me more efficient in creating plans and providing services for vulnerable people.
My passion for helping and supporting those whose economic and financial standings have hindered their growth in our society, has driven me towards social work. I feel I have exhausted every possible avenue in my current degree field. Pursuing a master’s in Social Work, will give me the diversity that I need, while aiding me in bringing my dreams of working more in depth with clients, by helping assist them with their individual needs and issues to reality. The Social work field also offers versatility which allows me to work in many dimensions, such as clinical, case management, and many other composites which enables me to help every population. Becoming a social worker gives me other benchmarks in which I can use to evaluate programs,
A sample of two client system in the EEUCC In fact, social work professional is like some other professions that need to build professional relationships in the agency. Social workers may have professional relations with these professionals such as doctors, lawyers, and teachers, as well as with other social workers (Robison, & Reeser, 2000). Therefore, professional relations were established with some of the center's employees according to the nature of the work as a practitioner of social work. They are the intern’s advisor, and the fifth-grade students’ teacher.
By using the values of the afrocentric perspective, one is identifying all the needs by being applying tools which allow you to be culturally aware, identify client strengths, and develop and be aware of the interconnectedness of individuals receiving services. It allows clinicians to effectively advocate for the rights of individuals with mental health issues. These rights include but are not limited to, one’s right to be employed and educated. It allows the clinician to support the client and advocate for these rights in times of discrimination. For example, if something were to happen to Maria in Ashford & LeCroy’s example while in the care of the police department, myself as her social worker can and will advocate for her rights.
