The effects of caffeine based energy drinks on cognitive and physiological function in first year undergraduate students.
Introduction:
Caffeine is a naturally occurring substance that acts as a neurotoxin and stimulant to the body. When orally consumed, caffeine is near fully absorbed into the blood and body tissues 45 minutes after ingestion and has a half-life close to 4 hours (coffeandhealth.org). When consumed in moderate doses it can masks fatigue and can alter an individual’s perception to be less sleepy and to obtain a heightened sense of alertness. Consumption of caffeine incurs a variety of side effects such as: increased heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure, blood sugar levels, stomach acid secretion and production of urine

This challenges the findings from previous studies, for example Mayo Clinic researchers conducted a similar experiment where subject group were given the energy drink and a placebo. The findings indicated a significant rise in blood pressure for those who consumed the energy drink when compared to the placebo group. In addition the effect was most pertinent for those who did not consume caffeine on a regular basis, thus suggesting that energy drinks may increase the risk of cardiac events. Despite the benefits of caffeine, it is important to take into account the detrimental health effects that concurs within the body when consuming. Studies show that in hypertensive individuals, caffeine intake produces an acute increase in blood pressure (BP) for ≥3hours (Mesas AE1, Leon-Muñoz LM, Rodriguez-Artalejo F, Lopez-Garcia E.2011). Conversely it is paramount to not only examine caffeine in the drink, but the other ingredients such as taurine and glucose that are found in the energy drink that may influence human physical and cognitive …show more content…
This is not the result expected due to caffeine being classified as a stimulant that in theory would increase physiological function. Furthermore a study done in India (Effect of red bull energy drink on reaction time and maximal voluntary contraction – get authors name) found that caffeinated energy drinks did improve reaction time, however the control drink used to draw a comparison which was non caffeinated also provided improved reaction time results thus suggesting that it was a different factor other than caffeine that influences reaction time. Although conflicting research has been conducted by Alford C1, Cox H, Wescott R which produced significant evidence of increased reaction times, memory and concentration that indicates improved subject alertness when under the influence of
With this being said, the author includes this in his essay because he wants to show that it is possible to go without caffeine, but people consume caffeinated drinks in order to feel awake, alert, and focused. In addition, Gladwell includes scientific information about how caffeine works in humans’ bodies. He does this to show that caffeine has a healthy and safe effect on one’s body, and because of this, “caffeine is such a wonderful stimulant” (250). Therefore, Gladwell effectively incorporates historical figures and scientific knowledge in his essay in order to give strong evidence, and it would be difficult for people to argue against why caffeine has a beneficial impact on
Energy drinks have a lot of sugar, and Andres was a diabetic. Not monitoring how much sugar you intake can cause very high blood pressure and can lead to other serious problems. Not only did Andres not care and got highly addicted to these energy drinks, he didn't know that just because he was exercising and losing weight, these energy drinks made him have an irregular heart beat and that led to a tragic death. Energy drinks are the worst thing to drink before or during a workout. Your heart rate will ride intensely and can cause your heart to beat faster or even stop completely.
The energy drink increased running pace (Ps conclusions are that the ingestion of 3 mg/kg of caffeine using an energy drink increased the speed of the players and movement patterns during the rugby games. Also, the energy drink had an insignificant side-effect that shows the energy drink was not a health risk to the players, at least with the dosage used in this investigation (Coso et al.,
Alkaloids, such as caffeine, are often physiologically active in humans and are known central nervous system stimulants. Caffeine also causes an increase in respiration and heart rate, as well as nervousness and insomnia if consumed at high dosages . Though caffeine has demonstrated to have physical dependence, it is also capable of improving alertness, learning capacity, and exercise performance
Caffeine did not have a measurable effect on the heart rate
ELECTRIC ENERGY DRINKS Teya Rampaul Grade 9H INTRODUCTION Energy drinks give us a quick burst of energy when we are feeling tired but which one gives us the most amount of energy? To find out which energy drink would give us the most I am going to test which energy drink has the highest voltage. One of the people I interviewed said that they would like to know which energy drink has the highest voltage. Another person that I questioned said that he doubted energy drinks had any voltage at all.
Generally citizens swig a cup of coffee in the morning and energy drinks is for an active sporting event. Personally in my opinion, I rather drink energy drinks than coffee because I don 't like the bitter taste of coffee. Although there are differences in coffee and energy drinks there are also similarities between the two. One fact is coffee and energy drinks help with concentration and physical endurance performance.
Perspectives are often prejudiced by preconceived notions. Society has historically communicated that addicts are morally negligent people without any inclination to cease their destructive behavior and that the addiction itself is produced because of a character flaw or a weakness. Citing the addict’s seemingly careless attitude toward the financial burden and pain and suffering they arbitrarily cause others as proof of their imagined personality imperfections. As with numerous other things, unfortunately, experience is the best teacher. Before my personal journey with a drug-addicted child, I also held to the belief that an addict was an addict by choice and could stop the abuse by simply making the decision to.
Caffeine is a chemical found naturally in few plants all over the world. From these plants it is processed into its pure form and then put into other things such as soda, energy drinks, tea, and pills. Energy drinks and soda are some of the most widely marketed products in the world, even though they contain the highest concentration of caffeine outside of pure caffeine supplements. It is a stimulant that affects everyone in strange but semi predictable ways. Research has been done on this topic since the 1920’s and many different conclusions have been reached.
Whenever a consumer uses an energy drink a series of effects begin in his/her body. The organism receives an instant boost as the caffeine successfully manages to block the duties of the adenosine, a chemical located in the brain whose function is involved with sleeping. After the completion of the process caffeine forces part of the neurons in the brain to lighten up, which later on causes the body to release the hormone adrenaline. When the hormone is active it forces the liver to provide the bloodstream with additional
How Coffee Works? Here, we are going to learn a little science beyond the importance of Coffee intake in our routine daily life. Our brain develops a neurotransmitter called Adenosine which influences our attention, alertness and sleep. When caffeine hits the brain it overpowers the Adenosine for few hours and keeps us active for a long time.
It is urgent that we pace the amount of caffeine from energy drinks that we ingest on a daily basis. When it comes to tedious duties
I was finally able to have a chance to test what i have almost been thinking. I felt I can learn from what happens day to day and understand the science behind what I drink almost every day, for me, it's tea in this case. Tea has long been seen as a traditional Chinese thing, and having a family that love to drink it, it was an interesting topic. Most people says tea is healthy and it is good for you, with this in mind I wanted to investigate on the chemical composition of tea. I decided to focus on the amount of caffeine produced with a fixed time from dry tea
Contrary to what many people think, drinking coffee is not associated with an increased risk of heart disease. In fact, drinking coffee does the exact opposite; it decreases the risk of contracting heart disease. One study in Japan showed that drinking at least 1 cup of coffee on a daily basis reduced the risk of dying from heart disease by 38% in men. Yet another research carried out by Harvard School of Public Health in conjunction with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center concluded that drinking at least 4 cups of coffee daily reduced the risk of heart failure by 11%. Studies have also shown that drinking coffee can help minimize the risk of arteries being
The dose of caffeine in energy drinks can be very harmful to your health. After consuming one can of energy, caffeine is excreted from the body within 3-5 hours, after which the body needs rest. If at that moment to drink coffee, tea or drink another jar of energy, then the daily allowable dose of caffeine will be exceeded several times, and this can lead to an increase or decrease in pressure, tachycardia. The amount of taurine, which is a part of energy drinks, exceeds the daily norm by hundreds of
