In the “Candy Waterfall” project, the effects that size and shape have on the rate of mass flow are tested through the use of multiple different granular materials going through a funnel. In lower grade levels students are taught about the three types of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. What are not explained are materials like sand: you can stand on sand like a solid, but you can also pour it out of a bucket like a liquid. Materials like sand are known as granular materials. By testing the rate of granular flow, factories that need to put food into packaging will be able to package products properly if engineers know exactly how fast the item flows out of the machinery. Solids, liquids and gases are the commonly known states of matter that consist of distinguishable physical properties. A solid has a fixed volume and shape consisting of rigid particles locked into place. Each of the five candies has different properties which enables experimenters to distinguish; what characteristics of the candy affect the flow rate, what size candy will flow faster and why, and if smooth materials flow faster. Mini M&Ms as well as M&Ms will be used to differentiate the effect of size on granular flow. Nerds opposed to M&Ms do not have a distinct circular shape and are even smaller. M&Ms and Jelly Beans are fairly the same size they have different shapes, which can aid in discovering what affects the mass flow rate. Gummy Bears on the other hand have a shape vastly different from that of any other candy being used and also do not have a smooth shell covering the candy. Natural Selection is the concept that organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring. This leads to the creation of populations and diversity of life within them. In the Skittlefish Lab, many separate occurrences can be observed which detail and explain how Natural Selection works on a population over a period of time. Certain adaptations in a species in its entirety may display how individuals impact the whole population as they pass their traits onto their offspring, which do the same. This lab required students to observe the individual “Skittlefish” and “Sea M&Ms” in different environments as they camouflaged and hid from predators.
In almost every experiment, there’s an independent and dependent variable, a constant, and a control group. The independent variable in this lab was the coins. The dependent variable was the density. The constant was the amount of water. In this lab, there was no control group .
The Jolly Rancher is not sticky unless you put it in your mouth and take it out. The Jolly Rancher has a rough kind of feel to it though, but the feeling is overall satisfactory. The Tootsie Roll, on the other hand, is sticky, and slimy, so just holding it was enough to me want to stop feeling the candy. The Tootsie Roll also has somewhat of a smooth feeling to it, which helps it become a little less gross. The texture of the Jolly Rancher wrapper, is bumpy and plasticky, while the Tootsie Roll’s wrapper was soft and smooth.

The purpose of this lab was to change pennies from copper to silver to gold, like alchemists have attempted to do in history. Through the data and observations gathered throughout this experiment, it can be concluded that the pennies were not changed into a different element. For example, the density of the penny from 2005; which was the penny that was experimented on to see whether or not it could turn into silver; was 4.62 g/cm3 before the experiment and 4.89 g/cm3 by the end of the experiment. If this copper penny really would have turned into silver, then the density of the penny would be 10.49 g/cm3; which is the density of silver; by the end of the experiment. The penny may have turned silver in color, but this was only because it was plated in the zinc that was added to the beaker of water in the experiment.
On the trip with SWEEP the health of the Susquehanna River was studied. In order to do that, chemical test, biological tests, and physical observations were made. Chemical testing showed the more scientific side of water quality, such as the amount of nitrates, phosphates, the pH values, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity. Searching for macroinvertebrates was the biological testing. Certain macroinvertebrates and the quantity found determines how healthy the stream is.

In this egg drop project, a container was built to house one egg and was then dropped at various heights. The purpose of this lab was to find how impact time affected the force with which an object, the egg container, hits another surface as the momentum moves to zero. Our hypothesis states that if the impact time is stretched longer then the force exerted on the egg would decrease, making the egg less likely to break. The independent variables for the egg drop project was the height at each drop; the dependent variables were impact time and survival of the egg. The controls were mass, design of the container, and the egg.
Title: THE BALLOON INFLATION REACTION Introduction: Chemistry is one thing that makes us understand and gives us reasons of why certain reactions gives certain results. In this experiment we will be illustrating the reaction between baking powder and vinegar and see what happens to the balloon that is attached to it. Hypothetically the reaction of the vinegar and baking powder will produce carbon dioxide which will inflate the balloon. If the more vinegar may happen that when more vinegar is added to the baking powder it may produce more carbon dioxide thus the balloons diameter increases.
