1. Was killing Captain Beatty right or wrong? Are books worth more than human beings? Captain Beatty deserved to be killed in a way that he brought the death upon himself. The reason he was killed was because he enraged Montag to the point where he could not handle himself any longer and just threw the flamethrower at Beatty. Moments before Beatty’s death, Montag described him as someone who, “want[ed] to die so much that you let a man walk armed and then instead of shutting up and staying alive, you go on yelling at people and making fun of them until you get them mad” (Bradbury 122). It is evident that Beatty was asking to be killed, since he was threatening Montag at the scene instead of just settling things down with him later on. In a way, Beatty’s death is considered right, however book are not worth more than human beings, it is just in this one case where it is justified. …show more content…
Not only do most people in Fahrenheit 451 not read, but they also don’t write. What kinds of freedom does writing provide? Writing is a remarkable tool that can give a person the freedom of expressing your thoughts visibly and allow them to share their knowledge with many others. Although it is just words on a piece of paper there are endless possibilities to what it can be about which is what gives it its value. Just like Montag said to his wife, “there must be something in books, things we can't imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don't stay for nothing” (51). The value of literature cannot be measured because of the freedom it gives to people that appreciate it
The quote by Captain Beatty in the movie explains much of the motivation and accepted ideology of the community in Fahrenheit 451. The only way to establish total equality is to level the playing fields, and to level the playing fields one must get rid of objects that promote differences and individuality, i.e. books. Many Utopian novels attempt to establish possibilities of total equality, however as we’ve studied there is not “true” utopia for all. The perceived social, racial, and economic fairness always seem ingrained and there will always be those who oppress others through its use of infringement of human rights, lack of free will, and charged language concerning reinforcing the idea of equality, this is often utilized in Fahrenheit
Beatty who is a negative person influences and convinces everyone around that burning is good. Mean and bitter people in the world come with very similar qualities, such as negativity, big egos, are hypocrites ect. Which Captain Beatty possesses in the book Fahrenheit 451. He is someone who has read books before but describes to his men that they are evil and not good for anyone or anything. Which is the firefighters only and important job, to burn books which is consider as “helping the people”.
Grade We can all agree that Captain Vere was a man who was attempting to make the right desicion for his crew. However, some people believe that he did not have the right to demand the immediate trial of Billy Budd, while others believe that he did have the right to call the trial. I believe that Vere was not sretching his hand past his boundries as a captain to demand the trial to be immediate. The First reason why I believe that Vere was in the right to call the trial is that he was the head of the ship.
In the book, Fahrenheit 451, Captain Beatty who is the head Fireman of the city, says that books are not allowed in society because its cancerous if someone reads the other person wants to read and it can create conflict and that becomes inequality. Captain Beatty starts by saying that the job they do in their city involves fire but they don’t take out the fire. In addition, they start the fire by burning the whole house down because a citizen is not allowed to have a book which causes conflict. He describes it by saying that the books are like a loaded gun, it can be contagious just like a virus. For example, Captain Beatty explains “a book is like a loaded gun next door we have to burn it take the shot from the weapon”(Page 58)
What is the definition of beauty? Webster’s dictionary says “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses”, but to some people true beauty comes in fire. Such is it with the society seen in Fahrenheit 451. As Shown during the course of the novel the differences of character, acts, and opinions between Montag and Captain Beatty burn brighter that the kerosene drenched houses at night.
In the book Fahrenheit 451 Montag was forced to make a split second choice by Beatty. To kill Beatty or to let himself fall in the other norm of society . Beatty was the chief of the firemen and with that power he made Montag burn down his house. Beatty also took it upon himself to send the hound to Montag's place to try and scare him into submission. Montag is not guilty for killing Beatty and here is why.
Beatty is the devil. Captain Beatty is a complex character in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, as his character is rather paradoxical, embodying both the dangers of censorship and the value of literature. Beatty, being the captain of the fire department, is tasked with burning books whilst having a deep appreciation of literature himself. Whilst at the same time, working with and enforcing the government's rules. Beatty’s contradicting characteristics and manipulative personality is used throughout the book as a paradox to inform the readers about status and power.
No decent human being would take someone else’s life. No one is born with the right to take someone’s last breath for them and that is not a earned thing either. Murder Rogers 3 is very serious and is never moral. The bible even says in the Ten Commandments that we “Shall not kill.” Should justice be more important than human decency?
Many novels create societies in which a good majority of the freedoms we enjoy are taken away. In these societies the general population typically likes the way they live, while a small group of them do not. These two groups of people both have different viewpoints on what a free society is, one group preferring a society that is more equal overall and the other preferring to have more personal freedoms Both of these versions of a society are considered to be “free”. The novel Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury is a prime example of these two sides of what is considered to be a free society.
A life without books? In 2005 approximately 3.1 billion books were sold varying from textbooks, fiction, comedy, romance, and bibles. This statistic provides a conclusion that the American society relies on books. Whether it be for information, or leisure enjoyment, books are a necessity. The majority of the average humans education comes from a book, so would getting rid of them be beneficial to society?
How Captain Beatty of Fahrenheit 451 Illustrates “The Mindset of Those Who Censor” Persis Karim said in The New Assault on Libraries, "Obviously, the danger is not in the actual act of reading itself, but rather, the possibility that the texts children read will incite questions, introduce novel ideas, and provoke critical inquiry." Set in the 24th century, Ray Bradbury’s book, Fahrenheit 451, depicts a society in which books have been outlawed by a government fearing an independent-thinking public. Enforcing this law through incineration of book material, homes, and even book owners is the duty of firemen, such as the Chief Captain Beatty, whose insidious personality makes him the quintessence of an antagonist. However, his contradictions
n. In the book, Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury, there was evidence that Beatty was persuading and terrorizing his fellow firemen and society because of the power in his hands. Although, He was educated by reading books, Beatty was not justified for hiding the truth about censorship because he kept society from thinking, used his power for evil instead for good and sent fear throughout society. He is just as guilty as Montag because he to read books. As well as, hid information that was very valid to the knowledge of the people of the society.
The novel exploits human desire for the now and the easy, critiques human dependency on technology and the media, and shows the effects of extreme government control. This causes the reader to examine their actions from a different perspective. Fahrenheit 451 was also written to show the importance of knowledge. It causes the reader to think of valuable questions about the need for the information located in books. Ultimately, knowledge is power.
“...for there are no mountains to make them cower, to judge themselves against.” as said by Captain Beatty in Fahrenheit 451. In the novel, Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury, Captain Beatty is sought out to be the antagonist in the dystopian society in which he lives in. His views on happiness in the society being everyone is made equal, not given equal opportunities as shown in the quote cited above.
