The film focuses on the characters lives and how they can keep going when they struggle with society. The film uses rhetorical strategies such as pathos, ethos, and logos to make this movie bring emotions, blank stares, and leave the audience to question reality. The purpose of the specific camera shots and angles is to provide an appropriate view of the movie. Lastly, the use of persuasion to allow the audience to interpret what the film says versus the thoughts in their head. Play writes include some stage direction and instruction regarding the visual aspect of the story. In this sense, the filmmaker has the strong basis for adapting a play to the big screen. “A Raisin in the Sun” is a play by Lorraine Hansberry that debuted on Broadway in 1959.

The novel ‘Jasper Jones’ written by Craig Silvey and the film ‘Dressmaker’ directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse have connected to the audience and use of narratives conventions in very similar ways. The ways that they have succeed doing this is through characteristics, plot and setting. By looking into how they are used by the author/ director widen the knowledge and have deeper in-depth understanding on how authors and directors use them to connect with the audience. The author and director have used characteristics to connect with the audience by using relatable situations like peer pressure, disliked by people, challenges and traumatic experiences.

The setting of the movie looks very dystopian like because the streets are dark, gloomy and deserted. There also seems to be a lack of human life on the streets as all the people lock themselves up in their houses. Also through the movie, the government goes through a lot of problems that leads them towards a scandalous state. The scandalous state of the government tells us that the government is about to come to end and be defeated by the one who claims himself to be the hero known as V. The qualities of totalitarianism depicted in the movie are secret police, fear, violence, lack of trust, dictatorship and propaganda. Secret police is shown to us in movie when Evey leaves her apartment after curfew.

The film 13th directed by Ava DuVernay targets an intended audience of the Media and the three branches of the United States government with an emphasis that mass incarceration is an extension of slavery. It is intended to inform viewers about the criminalization of African Americans and the United States prison boom. 13th uses rhetorical devices in its claim to persuade the viewers by using exemplum in the opening seconds of the film. President Barack Obama presents statistics, saying “the United States is home to 5% of the world’s population but is home to 25% of the world’s prisoners.” Also the film uses a hyperbole in talking about the movie Birth of a Nation produced in 1915 which portrays a black man as a violent savage who will kill white women.

The intriguing world of Casablanca, displays a wondrous mise-en-scene in fashion that accentuates emotions and feeling through aspects of cinematography. From the movement of the camera, to the intricacy of the shot distances chosen to be included within the frame, the film reveals important elements of the diegesis without uttering a sound. The cinematography of Casablanca gives the audience an insight into the intimacy of Rick and Ilsa's relationship, and seeks to situate the viewer’s attention to the space and time of the film. Throughout the film, Rick’s romantic relationship, or rather previous relationship, with Ilsa appears to be a focal point of the film.

The film demonstrates how and why particular facts about the social world relate. I believe that this film has a functionalist perspective. This film focusses heavily on social order and keeping a society stable. The president uses fear tactics to control citizens and keep the lower class in its place while the upper class lives lavished lives. One way that this stayed maintained was that no travelling amongst districts was permitted so the citizens believed all districts were treated fairly equal (Crossman).

Cinematography is critical to the success of any movie. Cinematography uses composition, lighting, depth of field, and camera angles to determine what the audience sees. Casablanca’s cinematography directs the audience’s attention, shapes the audiences feelings, and reveals the theme of the movie. Cinematography directs the audience’s attention and acts as the viewer’s eyes. The cinematography highlights Casablanca as a dangerous place filled with deception.

“Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.” These are the words spoken by Rick Blaine as he drinks himself into a slight stupor to cope with the grand entrance of the beautiful, yet mysterious Ilsa Lund. These two mentioned above are former lovers and the two main characters of the 1942 film Casablanca. Why Rick speaks these words with despair is because of Ilsa Lund, whose archetype is common in most if not all noir movies. This archetype is known as the femme fatale which literally translates to, fatal woman.

After the United States entered World War II, it was a little over a year before audiences saw Casablanca. It doesn’t take much investigation to see how the war plays a part in the storytelling, but certain film techniques helped emphasize messages the film wanted to tell its audience. Through the use of camera movement, the finale of Casablanca puts the spotlight on Strasser and Rick’s newfound relationship, which can convey a message about the United States and its allies.

In total, the film contains four noticeable narratives. The first narrative shows Hugo working with his father prior to his passing. Through this narrative, viewers are able to see how Hugo’s father died in a fire. The second narrative tells the tale of Georges Méliès’s buying and selling of property. The third narrative is of the librarian visiting Georges Méliès as a young child at his studio, and the fourth narrative shows Hugo and his father enjoying time at the theater together.

The narration in the movie can be described as circular narrative as the ending and beginning when merged complete the timeline of the movie(1). This narrative structure is rather unconventional and reminds the audience at multiple instances that this is not real life and they are watching a movie.
