Causes Of Mass Murders

The Virginia Tech mass murderer “Seung-Hui Cho” is a mass murderer. He is a mass murderer because he killed more than four people at one location during one continuous period of time. Even though that Cho went into two class rooms it still counts as one location because he was still at the school. Cho killed thirty two people and wounded many more within an hour. He walked in the classroom closed the door and started a shooting rampage.

A brief overview on the Virginia-Tech Massacre reading is that it is an approach/explanation towards a male, Seung-Hui Cho, for his killing of 32 professors and fellow students, injuring another 25, and then finally killing himself at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. This reading explains four different yet similar incidents that might’ve lead to Cho becoming murderous and wanting to kill others. In addition, the reading also provides a short introduction on Cho’s personality and how peers around him contributed their own negative thoughts to his personality which led Cho to think that killing is the solution to things. The Holocaust, meaning ‘sacrifice by fire’ (3), was a time in which mass murders were conducted by the Nazi Party. At this time, many of the Nazi’s policies were targeted towards the Jews as they were believed to be the reason that Germany lost the First World War and Hitler stated that ‘the personification of the devil as the symbol of all evil assumes the living shape of the Jew’ (3). Mass shooting episodes have increased over recent decade and received substantial media coverage during the last year. Multiple schools, clubs, and churches, and public places across the United States have been impacted, resulting in the deaths of innocent people. The United States has more mass shootings than any other country between 1966 and 2012. There has been shootings in public places receiving media coverage and giving the perception that they are becoming the new normal.

Let's say that someone is walking down the hall in the middle of a school, then, all of a sudden a kid runs in and BOOM! Shots ring in their ears and they start to cry, looking around to see if they can find anyone else but all they see are dead bodies on the ground, covered in blood. Then, they look up at the end of the hall and there he is, holding a gun ready to shoot; what will they do? Run for their life? Then, for a moment this person closes their eyes and they wonder, why would someone do this?

There are two types of mass murderers, organized and disorganized. An example of an organized mass murderer is Eric Harris and his friend Dylan Klebold. They killed thirteen people and wounded more than twenty others at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999 (“Eric Harris”). In the biography of Harris, they called him a psycho, which falls under the subcategory of an organized murderer known as a disciple killer. Disciple killers are known to follow commands or fall under a ‘spell’ of their leader.

Mass murderers and serial killers are nothing new to today’s society. We learn about them in TV shows, books, research papers, in our classes, etc. Psychologists have spent decades trying to uncover the truth behind these killers’ madness. Serial killers vary in their behaviors, techniques, desires, mental illnesses and their personal lives. Have you ever heard of the Tamiami Trail Killer?

It is human nature for humans to look out for their own interest and not care about others. Some people do this to more extremes than others, aka killing someone. They would rather look at what they have to gain than what they might be hurting or inflicting on others. Some theories show that homicide does an excellent job at giving people a rush or some sort of power due to the magnitude of homicide. Although they differ, when one kills for a financial benefit, this also plays into emotional pleasure.
