Causes of WWII From the millions of casualties on the battlefield to the countless lives forever altered in the concentration camps, the Second World War was one of the most horrific scenes in modern history. This great tragedy was influenced by the Treaty of Versailles of 1919, Hitler’s acts of aggression, the failure of appeasement, and the inaction of the League of Nations. World War II began in 1939 when Britain and France declared war on Germany after Germany’s invasion of Poland. Although this sparked the war, the causes are more complex.
