Salva had faced many challenges for instance, most the time he was on the line of starvation, and dehydration. He didn’t have food for about a week at one point and almost collapsed to the ground, he had to get honey out of a beehive with vicious bees constantly stinging them. Although he was starving that little glob of honey satisfied him well, because it could keep him going longer, as he enjoyed the honey in his stomach. In A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, the author tells the story of two children. A girl who gets water every day at a pond and walks for hours so her family can live off the water, and a boy who got separated from his family and must go on an torturous journey. Both these characters show ways of survival and …show more content…
Salva also didn’t give up when he barely could move because of his lack of energy. Another point in the novel Salva made it to a camp that would take care of his needs (shelter, food, water, warmth, cloths). Years later he is forced to leave the camp and chased into the Gilo river. The Gilo river contains alligators, and the men who chased them were trying to shoot them with guns, there was also a large possibility that they could have drowned. You would have to be brave to jump into a river with alligators eating children, and kids being shot and floating down the river right before your eyes. Although Salva he was brave he has to be intelligent for him to surive the challenges that he faced. In the novel its states, "... Salva had become leader of about 1500 boys. Some as young as five years old" (Park 80). Salva carried the group of the lost boys to safety, with only a few dead. During this time they had stepped up to be the leader giving everyone equal food and making the larger boys carry the little kids with not enough energy. This shows Salva is intelligence because he almost all the children. He does this by giving all the children and boys equal food and making the larger boys carry the …show more content…
During this time he determined because he could have easily just give up stop looking for food, forget about the boys he is leading, but he didn't he was patient and helped everybody. While Salva world's leading The Lost Boys to safety he must care for them equally so they can survive. This would be hard for Selva because there are so many and he must help them find food stay warm not starve to death not dehydrate not get injured not get eaten by prey ect. Determination is a strong point during this time because he must stay determined to bring the lost boys to safety not to lead them the wrong way not to abandon them not to leave them on their own.Even though the determination that Salva possessed had a great impact on him, it was all three qualities, being brave, intelligent, and determine, as well as the many other qualities combined that brought him to safety and found his family. In conclusion, Salva was a character in the book who constantly struggled to survive the terrible challenges of living in harsh climate of south Sudan. During this time he tries to outrun the war while looking for his family, because they got seperated by the war. He has been running through extreme heat and facing dehydration, However he survived mostly because of his
Uncle told him “A step at a time. One problem at a time-just figure out this problem.” This helped Salva get through many many other obstacles as well. Another example happens later in the book when Uncle dies and the rest of the group starts treating Salva badly. Salva perseveres and manages to deal with the leftover scraps that they grudgingly give him.
Firstly his determination, with Salva’s determination, he manages to escape to the bush, and begin his long walk to refuge. At the beginning of the book ‘A Long Walk To Water’ Salva calmed himself down to focus, think and escape “Boom! Salva turned and looked. Behind him, a huge black cloud of smoke… Salva lowered his head and ran”(Park pg 8, 11) In addition, even after his best friend Marial passed he kept walking, and walking.
Salva's long journey away from the war, surviving the deaths of Marial, Uncle, and others around him(p.65). He was also nearly killed several times, and he may have felt unhappy and wanted to give up many times. But when he remembered how much his Uncle had cheered him up and how happy he was with Marial, he knew he had to keep going. He'd been through a lot of ups and downs. When Salva is adopted by a family in the United States, he faces the challenge of entering a new world, a new life with the same qualities: resourcefulness and courage, gratitude and perseverance, hopefulness, and a resolve to make a difference.
When Salva was walking with the only family he had, his uncle, they got robbed. The robbers captured his uncle and shot him right before Slava’s eyes (63). That tragic event would leave most people in shambles, but Salva, he kept going. Salva and Nya went through many hardships but they never let that get in their way. We can all learn a thing or two from these resilient
Even while Salva “fights his demons” he decides to keep walking instead of giving up. Themes from the book such as persistence and perseverance save his life and thus influence his choices as the book progresses. Additionally, Nya chose to keep fetching water for her family, despite the long dangerous path that she had to make every day while barefoot. Her perseverance as well as her determination for her family led to people such as her dad drilling a well in their village, not only helping their family, but also the lives of others. Salva on the other hand embarked on a journey with his uncle and complete strangers.
This was only possible because the group’s perseverance and they worked through their troubles. In conclusion, we should all persevere like Salva and Nya and we will be rewarded. In the end, Salva makes his dream a reality and Nya gets clean water and can go to school, but only because they worked hard to do whatever they needed to
(pg 73) This shows that Salva is persevering because even though he hates the refugee camp, he
To sum up, Salva did make it through the stressful journey, Salva has been back and forth visiting his biological family and his forster family that lives in New York.. This journey lead him to the person he is today by inspiring people to not give up on a dream or idea they had. Today Salva is continuing a program for South Sudan “ Water For South Sudan” which builds wells in different villages in South
Another character in this book is Nya, an eleven year old Sudanese girl, who has to walk eight hours every day to get water for her family. She always keeps going, even though the way is hard because it is hot and the ground hurts to walk on. One example of hope and perseverance in A Long Walk to Water is how Salva never gives up. He is forced to leave his home and family in southern Sudan when his school is attacked, and goes on a long,
Throughout the novel Salva demonstrates determination by pushing himself to do his best and not give up on anything no mater what is going on. One instance where Salva showed determination is on page 65, paragraph 4. “Marial was gone. Uncle was gone, too, murdered by those Nuer men right before salva’s eyes. Marial and uncle were no longer by his side, and they never would be again, but salva knew that both of them would have wanted him to survive,to finish the trip and reach the itang refugee camp safely.
Salva uses his inner strength as courage to stay strong in order to find his family. This is seen in the beginning of the book when Salva is at the rebel camp and the soldiers order them to separate into two groups, men in one group and women, children, and elderly in the other group. Salva sees someone his age entering the men’s group, so he follows. When he tries to enter, that is when a soldier points a gun at his face.
Salva gets water and does housework for the old woman he considers family. In the text it states “He worked hard so she would not send him away.” (18) Salva worked hard, to have a place to stay during the fighting. Salva helped with the boats so he could get over the river faster. The text explains “It was hard work running back and forth between those cutting and those weaving.”
In the novel “A long Walk to Water” the main characters nya and salva are alike in many ways yet they are different in unique ways. Some of the concepts that are common and uncommon about nya and salva is Time, Family, and each of their personalities. There are many explanations how those three concept are both alike and different. So with the concept time, one thing that is different about them is the time periods between both of them.
Salva and Parvana, the brave and heroic protagonists in A Long Walk To Water and The Breadwinner, have more similarities than differences. Some of these similarities are, they are both courageous. Salva is courageous because he was able to swim through the river unscathed braving the current, the crocodiles, and the hail of bullets shot by the Ethiopian soldiers. Parvana was brave when she attacked Taliban soldiers on three separate occasions first when she attacked two soldiers to protect her fathers books, the second when at the prison when she protected her self and her mother and the third was in the market. A second similarity is that they both are able to keep moving forward no matter what happens, Salva shows this when he led dozens of boys across hundreds of miles of desert to safety, during this journey he experiences terrible pain, including his toe nails falling of but despite all this he pulled through and led those boys.
Many times has Savlas uncles words helped him through hopeless times. Salvas uncles words had encouraged Salva to go “ bit by bit, one step at a time”, so Salva thought, “ Perhaps…perhaps Salva could get through life at the camp in the way.” (72) As a result that Salva feels this way he is being encouraged by his uncles’ words, so that makes Salva feel stronger in a way. His uncle’s words help Salva, and encourage him through many of his challenges. Also in the book Salva remembers, “Most of all, he remembered how Uncle had encouraged him in the desert,”when
