Analysis Of Jane Addams 'Hull House'

"Jane," is a romance fiction story written by Mary Roberts Rinehart. In this story, we come across a female protagonist who displays the characteristics of a typical woman during the War period. This story has been analyzed by different literary critics as they try to describe the different point of views this story can lead one to believing. Jane shows qualities that can lead one to believing that she is hysteric, thus creating the theme of hysteria in relation to the domestic sphere. In contrast to this, Jane eventually breaks off from these norms and goes against the concept of angel in the house.

Jane Addams became a journalist because she wanted to help with the women’s history. She believed that women’s votes will provide the margin necessary to pass social legislation.

Chapter 5 (20 points) After deciding to carry out her plan, Jane Addams and Miss Starr went to Chicago, looking for a neighborhood to established Hull House using their own limited resources. They went out and advertised their plans to others with the goal to educate them about their reason of establishing a Settlement home. Many talked about the Settlement house, there were even a review done in the Evening Journal about it. Many people criticized the plan however some even praised the plan of the settlement house.

I remembered hearing about Jane Addams before and decided to research her. Once I learned about how she established Hull House that helped improve the lives of immigrants and the poor I knew this was the topic I wanted to dive deeper into. Jane Addams was born in Cedarville Illinois on September 6 1860 to a privileged family. Her family consisted of 8 siblings, her mother Sarah Weber, and her father John Addams. Addams father influenced her later accomplishments since he was a businessman and state senator.

The story shows how you should always be thankful for what you have because it could be gone within a second. Growing up underprivileged definitely teaches you things that you would not have learned or viewed in that way if you were middle class/upper class. Jane Addams made a very significant impact on America because of her hard work and will to change what she felt was wrong in america. Jane managed to change the lives of many impoverished people in america and also help solve many other issues in America like women's rights and corrupted politics. Jane was devoted to helping people and giving things to those who needed it most which was why she was able to help america in the way she did. Not only did Jane care for poor people herself but she changed many people's opinions about improving life for the poor which helped make more improvements throughout America. Because of Jane strong ambition to make a difference,she made a huge impact on life in America.

Jeannette and her siblings depend on each other like when Jeannette and Brian pair together when faced by bullies at school. Maureen exists as a sort of “black sheep” in the family because not only does she not have red hair, but she seldom spends time with the family and instead relies on others to care for her. That’s why Jeannette believes Maureen is in need of more protection than the rest of her siblings. Considering the neglect and abuse she suffered. I was extremely surprised that she did remain somewhat close to her parents.

Poverty was the parent Jeanette never had. Through her childhood it was the only thing that was constant and gave her something to learn from. Both of her parents appeared and disappeared just as fast their paychecks and did not set good examples. Her mother enjoyed a free lifestyle with no sense of responsibility, while her father used what was earned for gambling, drinking, or women. Although the poverty Jeanette endoured in her childhood was always there to set its weight on her, it shaped her.

She begins by talking about her college experience of how her own professors and fellow students believed and “always portrayed the poor as shiftless, mindless, lazy, dishonest, and unworthy” (Paragraph 5). This experience shocked her because she never grew up materialistic. She brings up the fact that she is the person with the strong and good values that she has today because she grew up in a poor family. In culture, the poor are always being stereotyped.

If Jane Addams were to do speed dating, she would most likely have chosen, Florence Kelley as a suitor for her work and involvement as a social activist. Florence Kelley was outspoken about racial equality and an activist for child's rights. She helped to create the NAACP, and was the vice president of NAWSA. Jane Addams supported and spoke out for equal treatment for all people, therefore her social and moral beliefs were compatible with Florence Kelley’s. While Kelley started the National Association for the Advancement of Colored people, Addams started the Hull House.

All through the ages, the Christ figure archetype has appeared in literature and film. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry gives himself to Voldemort purposefully sacrificing himself for the benefit of the Wizarding World. In doing this he becomes the “Savior” and functions as a Christ figure in the novel. The Christ figure also emerges in real life, as anyone who acts as a role model and demonstrates moral fiber at an enormous cost to him or herself. After reading Mother Tongue by Amy Tan, my perspective changed about the struggles for people who are not as good at English. All throughout this article Tan uses personal experience from her mom to show the readers the struggle while also using primary sources to back up her claim. All the evidence backs up her initial claim and as the reader your perspective changes after reading about how she personally was effected. The author 's main claim of Mother Tongue is to persuade people so respect people who struggle with English because she has serval personal connections, she has fact based proof, and she is an experienced writer on this topic and in general. All throughout the reading she uses many personal stories and personal experiences on how difficult it was for her mother to go through her everyday life.

Because of the needs of the community, Addams established a nursery, a playground, and a kindergarten as parts of Hull House (History.com, Jane Addams). She lived in Hull House for the rest of her life, but the effects that she had on society were well beyond Hull House. One of the most radical ideas that Addams had during her era was about immigrants. She believed that the cultures of immigrants should be respected, but that they should also be helped to adjust to American life (History.com, Jane Addams). Jane Addams was well known for her contributions to the feminist movement, and might be labelled as a lesbian in modern terms because of her romantic relationships with several close female friends.
