For example, Salva helps, Uncle Jewiir build canoes to safely cross the river. This is because the novel states- “It was hard work running back and forth between those cutting and those weaving… was better than doing nothing.”(43-44).This means that they have to work safely, fast and efficiently because there could be rebels anywhere. Secondly, Salva has to go to the desert, because he wants to flee the war in Sudan. “The first day in the desert felt like the longest day… and it was time to rest.” (53-54) This means that he will have to go to the desert with a little amount of water, he will have to save it in order to get enough energy to . Uncle told him “A step at a time. One problem at a time-just figure out this problem.” This helped Salva get through many many other obstacles as well. Another example happens later in the book when Uncle dies and the rest of the group starts treating Salva badly. Salva perseveres and manages to deal with the leftover scraps that they grudgingly give him.
The last external force that changed Sal was the fears she gained when she heard that her mom was dead. In the novel Sal gained fears of a whole bunch of life threatening things when her mom died. On page 12 Sal says, “For example, I was terrified of car accidents, death, cancer, brain tumors, nuclear war, pregnant woman, loud noises, strict teachers, elevators, and scads of other things.” This proves that Sal developed fears when her mom died. This is because Sal’s mom picked her up when she got hurt and killed the baby so now Sal is afraid of that.

Salva never gave up and took things ‘bit by bit, one step at a time. Nya always had hope and believed that there would be an easier way to get water, and she persevered every day by going to get water. Hope and perseverance relate to today because without them, we would never believe anything was going to get better or stay true to what we believe. We need hope in everyday life because if something is going bad at school, at home, at work, or anywhere, we need to be able to believe that something good will come. Also, we need to have perseverance because we need to stay true to what we believe or what we are
It makes Salva completely change the way he lives, where he lives, and what he lives for. As Salva reflects about the government, “He knew that the rebels from the southern part of Sudan, where he and his family lived, were fighting against the government which was based in the North”(Part 6). Due to there being an outbreak of violence and war in the setting Salva lives he is forced to run away from his family and leave his old life behind and start a new one. Salva is a survivor because he didn't get defeated by any of the animals, he almost got killed many times, and because his environment was very harsh. One factor that proved Salva is a survivor is because he didn't get defeated by all of the animals he crossed on his journey. Many people died while trying to cross the river because of the vicious crocodiles eating them and trying to kill them. “Later, he would learn that at least a thousand people had died trying to cross the river that day, drowned or shot, or attacked by .crocodiles”(79).

He knew that there was barely any water in the desert and that it was hard to find food which taught him to treasure everything he was given. Throughout the book we are led to believe that Salva’s parents and siblings had passed away but he never lost hope that they were still alive.
