One of the biggest character foils in Jane Eyre is between Mr. Edward Rochester and St. John Rivers. From the first time we meet these characters, it is easy to tell the two apart. While one is ruled by a religious forces the other is controlled by emotions. Jane has to make a choice, and decide how she is going to live the rest of her life. At the end of the novel, she makes a choice between what is expected of her, and what she wants. To simply the question, does she choose the Prince, who is saintly, and on a mission to help others, or does she choose the Beast who hold so much passion, that it is hard to contain? When meeting a stranger you immediately take in their appearance and features, just as Jane does after coming face to face with Mr. Rochester for the first time, noting that he had a “dark face, with stern features and a heavy brow; his eyes and gathered eyebrows looked ireful and thwarted” (Bronte Ch.12). During this encounter it becomes obvious that Rochester is more than a little rough around the edges, being rude and abrupt, while openly judging Jane. John was sacrificing passion for principal, while Rochester abandoned principle for consuming passion. This is one of the biggest differences in between the two characters, which is why Jane chose Rochester over John. At one point, Jane is describing both of their eyes, stating that Rochesters was, “under such steadfast brows, ever revealed such flaming and flashing eyes” (Ch.26). His eyes were full of fire, burning bright, full of passion, while St. Johns were rock, ice, and snow. Because of that warmth that radiated from Rochester's eyes, because of the emotion that flowed from them, Jane chose him. St. John gets to know her fairly quickly and realizes that she is amazing and beautiful woman. This is why he gets her the job as the governess for Mr. Rochester’s adopted daughter Adele. Jane teaches Adele how to speak English, while at the same time falls madly in love with her father. Who at first glance is not an attractive man by any means. This is a big way that Jane proves herself as a strong and beautiful woman because she never judges a book by its cover.
Rochester's first interaction was when Mr. Rochester fell off his horse and Jane helped him in the woods. This might foretell that Jane is going to help Mr. Rochester again when he has troubles and need help getting through them. Then we they meet at the house, he kind of ignored Jane and he was “left alone” and “did not take his eyes off from the group of the dog and child (Bronte 175), however after he asked Jane to sit down, he immediately started acting rude and impolite. Jane felt that this was completely normal, and if he did otherwise, she would be shocked. Then Mr. Rochester deems interested in Jane because of the way she answers all his questions.
Rochester and Blanche to that of an arrow being shot at someone’s heart. Jane describes Blanche as believing that “each shaft [she] launched hit the mark” and the arrows often “fell harmless at his feet.” By referring to an unsuccessful shot of an arrow into a heart, Jane describes her belief that Blanche fails to be worthy of Mr. Rochester’s love. With Blanche as the archer, her arrows of love are continually thrown at Mr. Rochester’s heart but never truly strike him in the way that love should. Jane seems to be envious and thinks that if she were the one launching the arrows at Mr. Rochester, they would strike him with true love that could fix his sternness.
Both characters, venturing out of their gender roles, find ways to compliment and figure out who the other person really is, and, in the end, a burgeoning love fully blooms. When examining the gender roles of Mr. Rochester and Jane, both are a blend of each and life seems better when conventional gender roles are forgotten. In Rochester and Jane’s first meeting, the two begin to show their blended gender roles immediately. Rochester is first described as having a “dark face” with “stern features”, with a complexion that seems, “ireful and thwarted” (146).
Rochester to act in questionable ways towards his relationship with Jane, and affects Jane’s life and her relationship with Mr. Rochester. Prior to meeting Jane, Mr. Rochester got tricked into marrying an insane woman, and the effects of that relationship on Mr. Rochester causes issues involving trust and secrecy surrounding his and Jane’s relationship. At Jane and Edward’s wedding, Mr. Mason interrupts the wedding and accuses Mr. Rochester of already having a currently living wife, and although at first he tries to deny it, he then admits that he has “been married: and the woman to whom I was married lives!... I daresay you have many a time inclined your ear to gossip about the mysterious lunatic kept there under watch and ward.” (Brontë 296).
Arguably, Helen’s short presence in Jane’s life influences Jane’s many of Jane’s decisions throughout the test. First, Jane forgives Mrs. Reed for her cruel treatment during Jane’s childhood. Jane also forgives Mr. Rochester for his deception and decides to return to him, all before knowing about the fire and Bertha Mason’s death. Just as Jesus preached to his disciples to forgive and live a pure life. In Maria Lamonaca’s literary criticism, "Jane's Crown of Thorns: feminism and Christianity in Jane Eyre" she states, “[Helen’s] example and beliefs serve Jane in good stead later in the novel.

Oftentimes, minor characters help to reveal a theme or contribute to the characterization of the protagonist. In the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Helen Burns serves as a foil character to the protagonist, Jane Eyre. Throughout the novel, Helen’s docile and pious nature helps to emphasize Jane’s development from a passionate girl to a modest woman. Helen’s theological beliefs also allow her to serve as a foil character to Mr. Brocklehurst, the headmaster of Lowood Institution, and St John Rivers, a zealous missionary, in order to reveal how Christianity is used to control Jane. Compared to the male characters in the novel, Helen’s positive use of religion proves to be more effective in encouraging Jane to adopt Christian values.
The tactics he employs to get his way also provide insight into a major theme of the novel. The major motive for all of Mr. Rochester’s deception was to win Jane’s heart so he could marry her. He is shown to be very intuitive
Rochester was a major influence on Jane as this was a critical time she was maturing, yet she did not let him get in the way of her work. The work that was expected of her what always her top priority, Rochester was her second. “I believe he is of mine;—I am sure he is,—I feel akin to him,—I understand the language of his countenance and movements: though rank and wealth sever us widely, I have something in my brain and heart, in my blood and nerves, that assimilates me mentally to him” (Bronte 266). Bronte 's Jane Eyre transcends the genres of literature to depict the emotional and character development of its protagonist. Although no overall genre dominates the novel exclusively, the vivid use of setting contributes towards the portrayal of Bronte’s bildungsroman (Realisms, 92) and defines the protagonist’s struggles as she grapples with her inner-self, and the social expectations of her gender. The novel incorporates Jane’s frequent conflicts, oppression, isolation and self-examination as she defends her identity and independence. Set amongst five separate locations, Bronte’s skilful use of literal and metaphorical landscapes, nature, and imagery, skilfully intertwines with the plot and denotes each phrase of her maturity.
Before Rochester, and his influence, Jane had been accustomed to men in power such as John Reed and Mr. Brocklehurst. Their influences on Jane were more negative as they tore Jane down instead of putting her up. These figures allowed the arrival of a seemingly encouraging, kind, and adoring man such as Rochester to be a shock to Jane when she was first employed at Thornfeild. This stems Janes biggest growth from Rochester, the bettering of her self-esteem. Due to Rochester’s exaggerative language he constantly teaches her the value of her self-worth and her beauty.

Jane hated that Mr. Rochester bought pretty jewelleries and dresses for her;” the more he bought me, the more my cheek burned with a sense of annoyance and degradation” (Brontë, 321). One can interpret this as Jane worries that the marriage would lessen her independence and put her at an inferior position. The fact that Mr. Rochester buys her all these things makes Jane feel objectified, and she could not tolerate it.
