Charles Gladwell Research Paper

In this book report I will be giving you insight on Gladwell’s book and what I believe the the message of the book is. In the next paragraph I will write about two Outliers and one cultural legacy that Gladwell, features in his book. In the book outliers Gladwell displays a reoccurring theme of people meeting success when all odds are stacked against them. The book goes over many examples but the first one I would like to highlight is Joe Flom.

Who is Benjamin Jealous? Benjamin Jealous was the NAACP leader from 2008 until 2013. Ben also was the youngest NAACP leader in history and under his leadership, NAACP grew into the largest civil rights group in the US. Before Jealous was the leader of NAACP, he was a journalist for 15 years, and had a passion to fight for people’s rights.

Horatio Alger was born in 1832 in Chelsea, Massachusetts and lived until 1899 where died in Natick, Massachusetts. Alger was born into a regular sized family with two brothers and a sister, Olivia Augusta Cheney, who was a well-known woman in her prime. She advocated for the rights of women in their time where women were only supposed to stay home and be perfect homemakers. She wanted more than that, and she spoke about it. She gave very good motivational speeches, and was a popular feminist who helped the woman’s’ rights movement.

This book, can relate to people who don't usually believe that they can make a change. That they have no effect on the world. This book, tells you straight up, that if you change yourself, you can change the world around you. This is very motivating, and a very awesome

Ray Bradbury Ray Bradbury was born on the 22nd of August 1920, he was born in Waukegan, Illinois to his Swedish immigrant mother Ester and his American father Leonard. While growing up and was in his teenage years he loved to watch horror and fantasy movies, he enjoyed the way the movies made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. In 1934 his family had moved to California where he joined his new schools drama club and meet all sorts of people including celebrities that he had befriended “Bradbury decided to become a writer at about age 12 or 13”(Ray Bradbury Biography).” When Ray Bradbury and his family had moved to Los Angeles he had gotten enrolled into the high school there and began going to school in September 1935. Bradbury learned so many knew and wonderful things at his new school, it was at his knew school where he had discovered that he had wanted to become a writer.

Anthony Sowell, also known as the “Cleveland Stranger”, is an identified American serial killer. Anthony was suspected in the murders of eleven women and arrested in 2009, and later charged with eighty five counts of murder, rape, and kidnapping. Anthony plead not guilty, with reason of insanity, but later change it to not guilty. In July 2011 he was convicted on all, but two counts.

The author Gladwell helped the reader to reach his message by providing characters with common experiences and turn them into positive experiences. He used characters to help the reader to find hidden messages. Gladwell was trying to make hidden messages easy to locate as a person reads deeper in the chapters within the book, he made this clear since the beginning of his book. The importance of the book is demonstrates how a legacy that includes culture can have failure and can be turned around into success just by an off chance (Locklear, 2016). Gladwell gives the reader a sense of empowerment showing the public to feel self-righteous because they too can become a famous song writer or athlete if they to put in their 10,000 hours of dedicated work to what they love to do (Locklear,

Oliver Hill became a strong supporter of equality. Equality is the state of being the same in number, race, class, or quality. Oliver Hill grew up in Richmond, Virginia on May 1, 1907. Graduating from Dunbar High School, Hill wasn't sure what he wanted to do for a living. He married a woman named Beresenia Walker.

Ernest Hemingway, a renowned 20th century American author, is known for his unique style of writing, memorable characters, and fascinating stories. Hemingway was born in the suburbs of Illinois but became infatuated with nature. His father, Clarence, would take his son on multiple trips to their cabin in northern Michigan. At the cabin, the family would hunt and fish. These activities became a large part within Ernest Hemingway’s life.

Hemingway’s characters are unhappy people of the lost generation who try to discover their happiness but fail to adequately do so. The lost generation’s actions did not result in anything positive and used escapism as a means to solve their problems. The reoccurring theme of dissatisfaction is the reason why Jake and Robert sought after brief pleasure. Although it may appear as though they lead enjoyable lives as they travel and drink often, the sense of lasting contentment and satisfaction is missing in all parties involved. For example, when Cohn was feeling depressed because he’s getting too old and feels his life is passing him by, he decides he wants to travel to south America.
