The article Chicano Manifiesto by Armando B. Rendon is talking about Rendon’s experience living in the United States as a Chicano citizen. He grew up on the West side of San Antonio with his grandmother and mother. Rendon learned Spanish as his first language, but as he started school Rendon had to soon learn English quickly since speaking Spanish was not allowed. At the age of ten, Rendon and his mom moved to the bay area. At the bay area he started to figure out who he was and what route to take on his life. Did he have to adapt to the “gringo” life as he called it or continue being a Hispanic child? As he grew up he decided to speak more English than Spanish and to be considered a “gringo” since he was the only Mexican in the San Francisco school. This was his audience because he wanted to explain his experience living in a different world other than his heritage. How things worked out for him and to never be ashamed of your heritage. As I was reading the article Chicano Manifiesto I was able to relate to Rendon. I was able to relate because I too went to a school where no one would speak Spanish and my brother and I where the only Mexicans in the school. I could not figure out my identity either, I was in a culture shock and I decided to try to fit in with the American culture. I learned English in a month for I would not feel stupid and not being able to communicate. It was hard but being a Chicano is something to be proud of. This article seemed logical because I went through that. Most of the stuff he did, I did because I thought that the only way to become successful was to just fit in the American culture. I do not know what life brings me later on after I graduate, but I figured out in my junior year in high school that our people, the Hispanics, will always have our back no matter what and they will help

Robert Rodrigo, author of “The Origins and History of the Chicano Movement” acknowledges that, “At the end of the Mexican American war in 1848, Mexico lost half of its territory to the United States and its Mexican residents became ‘strangers in their own lands.’” In stating this fact, Rodrigo exemplifies the United States’ relations with Mexico, that, ultimately, led to their oppression. This is because the movement itself began as a search for identity in a nation where Chicanos where once classified as White, but never received any of the rights associated with it and where later reclassified as Hispanic. It is also because what was once considered Mexican culture is no more as it has been taken, manipulated, and killed by the Anglos in their conquest. In “I am Joaquin” we see this concept throughout the work in a variety of forms that range from what Mexicans are to the concept of being Chicano. One major example of the search for Identity in the work is shown in the beginning with the paradox question where many young Chicanos are forced to choose between cultural life in poverty or stability at the price of their culture. The story “Blaxicans” was about a man name Richard Rodriguez the son of Mexican immigrants and was born in san Francisco in 1944. When Richard started school one of his teachers asked his parents to speak more English at home, and ricardo become Richard. Rodriguez points out that the term “Hispanic” describes a culture not a race, and that while there may be some tension between Black and Latino races, calling it a “war between blacks and Hispanics” is not valid because black is a race and Hispanic is a culture. Using his own personal experiences, he points out that our standards of multiculturalism based on Canada’s standards meaning we want things to be separate but equal. The author divides this book into three different parts. In the first part, he communicates to the reader how students with high leveled education and others get together to challenge the high-powered Anglos and Mexican American. In the second part, he examines how the Chicano movement flourished and how women and ex-gang members attempted to join the political world. In the final part, Montejano decided to include his point of view on how the political leaders that failed could’ve made a difference in the political world. This book was full of surprises, the way Montejano quotes actual people is just beautiful.

However, in order for one to truly understand the arguments made by the authors they must also understand the context behind these arguments; therefore, knowing how the individual authors’ definition of bilingualism lets the reader truly absorb what points they’re trying to make and why. In Espada’s essay, he defines bilingualism as a way for a person to remain in contact with their different cultural identities. There are many areas in the essay where the reader could interpret this definition from. During the Chicano Nationalist Movement, a well-known speaker, Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales, delivered a speech titled Chicano Nationalism: Victory for La Raza. In this speech, Rodolfo Gonzales tries to unify the Latin American people within the United States by using the idea of a family and to create a new political organization for the Chicano people. This speech was a cumulation of various ideas which stemmed from his own life, the experiences of the Chicano people, and the Chicano Nationalist Movement in general. Each of these factors contributed to the context of the speech and how the ideas within the speech are presented by Rodolfo Gonzales. Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales was born to Federico and Indalesia Gonzales, two Mexican immigrants, on June 18, 1928.
In order to write this book, the author clearly uses different manuscripts and papers that helped him to explain and show the situation of this social movement. He also uses and gets information from people that were living those situations, for instance in Chapter one, he mentions a note from Journalist Ruiz Ibañez: “Contrary to the common belief that those groups are composed of “punks” and hoodlums….”1. Related to him, he is an American historian and sociology that obtained his sociology and political science degrees in the University of Texas at Austin and Yale University, as well. Currently, he is a professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley and he is president of the Center for Latino Policy Research. He wrote not only Quixote’s Soldiers but also, Anglos and Mexicans in the Making of Texas, 1836-1986.

To get to Ueno Zoo, riding the bullet train was a necessity, except knowing which line was the correct line, when to get off the bullet train, or even which ticket to buy was a daunting task. Nobody in your group has the confidence to ask the workers for help since they don’t have the knowledge of Japanese to help them.
