Chris McCandless may first be described as a rebel and his inclination to abstain from the family he was brought up with. Krakauer says that he 'believed that wealth was shameful, corrupting, and inherently evil '. Despite that, Chris always liked money. Chris was also a very independent person who had a strong relationship with nature. Chris was also the kind of kid to always get good grades, without even trying to. I think Chris McCandless felt unfufilled in his life of privilege, and wanted to go out and experience life how he wanted to for awhile, and live freely. Chris may even still be alive today, had he been more prepared. Chris McCandless has always been a bit of a rebel. His spiritual awakening, has led him to quit society. He …show more content…
Chris only had a backpack with a few books, basic clothes, personal care items, and some other camping supplies. He also had a .22 caliber rifle with 400 rounds of ammunition. Chris 's intention was to live off the land as much as possible. He even Gallien, who was the person who gave him a ride to the Stampede trail a few things "Alex insisted on giving Gallien his watch, his comb, and what he said was all his money: eighty-five cents in loose change." (Krakauer 6) In Chris 's quest to become free and to find himself, also found death. He was irresponsible because instead of finding his way through a reasonable way, he just dropped everything, changed his name, and left without telling anyone anything. He should have realized that his .22 caliber rifle would not kill any big game such as moose or deer without multiple shots. Chris didn 't know about the seeds he was eating too, as they turned out to be toxic "... In the case if Chrisopher McCandless, there is evidence that H. alpinum seeds constituted a significant portion of his meager diet during a period before his death...it is highly likely that the ingestion of relatively large amounts of this antimetablolite was a contributing factor to his death."
Although many people think that Chris McCandless went into the wild due to literacy influences, the real reasons behind his actions were due to family problems and his risk-taking tendencies. The biggest reason that Chris McCandless left
Chris McCandless was selfish. He threw away his support system, undervaluing the importance of family, friends, community and the sacrifice they all put forth to make sure he was wanting for nothing. McCandless was uncompromising and inconsiderate of how difficult it was for his parents to provide him the best lift they know how to give. They were not perfect but made mistake and like a spoiled child he was unforgiving to their feelings along with many others along his journey of self discovery. Chris was incredibly selfish and immature by using every person along his way for his own personal goals to gain fulfill motives and to prove he was above the ideals of all of us ordinarily that work hard, follow rules, educate ourselves, live with
Most people look down upon Chris’s lifestyle and find it foolish, although this lifestyle has its flaws in the long term, this way of life carries a sense of beauty and nonconformity that most people will never understand. This lifestyle is not only full of beautiful and adventure but it gives life experiences that are worth more than money could buy. When Jon asked about Chris to one of his former co workers she replied with, “When he talked, he was always going on about trees and nature and weird stuff like that. We all thought he was missing a few screws” (40 Krakauer). Although Chris may come off as “missing a few screws” he was actually very intelligent
He wanted to go in there without really anything so that he can make things that were in the nature. “Chris didn’t think twice about risking his own life…”(Carine McCandless 128). I absolutely think that this quote about Chris is very true because he was so into finding new adventures to take, to enjoy and be happy with
Zach Schonfeld, from the Newsweek, writes , “it’s important to balance Chris’s mistakes along with his successes”(Schonfeld). This is true because we need to make we acknowledge that McCandless made several elementary mistakes throughout his journey. It is vital that those who find McCandless to be an idol of some sort realize that they should go out and discover themselves, but with the proper precautions and some sensibility. Finally, it is paramount to look at McCandless’s excursions and understand the positive lessons that can be learned from them. Risks are required for growth and McCandless is simply one who decided to take a risk in leaving behind his troubled past, for the hope of something
He did take a meager amount of supplies but that is what made the trip truly transcendental, because it connected him with nature in a way that cannot be done in a tent or sleeping bag. On his last trip, Chris tried to take a ten pound bag of rice, non waterproof boots, and a small rifle, to live for an extended amount of time in the Alaskan wilderness. He also forgot to take a map and did not know how to preserve meat out in the wild. However, that lack of preparation was not a death wish, he truly thought that he could survive on those things. Chris knew it would be difficult to do so, but he would survive, and that overall the challenge would make the trip a true experience.
Chris McCandless: A Reckless Idiot Chris McCandless was a reckless idiot and there is no denying that basic truth. Chris McCandless was a man born into a middle class family. Chris had parents that loved him, a roof over his head, and food to eat. Despite all those riches he had, he threw them away. Chris was a very selfish man.
"I think that Chris McCandless was bright and ignorant at the same time. He had no common sense, and he had no business going to Alaska with his Romantic silliness. He made a lot of mistakes based on ignorance. I don’t admire him at all for his courage nor his noble ideas. Really, I think he was just plain crazy."
Bringing a map, keeping some money with him, accepting items that people offered him, and many more factors contributed to his death. Dozens of predictions were made on how Chris died. Jon Krakauer wrote an article in the New Yorker specifically on how Chris died. “The probable cause of death, according to the coroner's report, was starvation.” (Jon Krakauer “How Chris McCandless Died”)
Romanticism was a movement during the late 18th century that encouraged imagination, exploration, individualism, and emotion. From it derived Transcendentalism, one of the first movements to originate from America and which bore the first American philosophers. These movements are often present in many pieces of American literature and this is no exception in Jon Krakauer’s novel Into the Wild. The historic account retells the story of a young man named Chris McCandless, who adopts the pseudonym Alexander Supertramp and takes to the road, only to die of starvation in Alaska. On the surface it appears to be cautionary tale, but Krakauer literally retraces McCandless’ steps, talking to the people who Chris spoke with and even traveling to Chris’ final resting place.
This clearly shows us that Chris did not have much common sense. If he had better survival skills and common sense he probably would have known not to eat that poisonous berry. It was his dream to be in the wild and he decided to pursue it. I respect his decisions and I personally believe it was a good decision other than the fact of him dying. He made the infinitive decision to do all of this so why stop
According to Walt, there was a point where he was getting tired and wanted to turn around but, Chris wanted to keep going all the way to the top. It has been said that the reason high-risk activities attract young men is because it gives them the sensation and adrenaline rush they are looking for. If you can't tell Chris McCandless was one of these sensation-seekers. Ever since Chris was little he had shown much interest in nature and wanting to be independent, but that wasn't the only thing he showed interest in. Westerberg said that him and Chris "talked about books for hours...
Even some people thought that McCandless was mentally unstable that was not the case. To begin with, Chris McCandless’ self-reliance embodies him because of his need to live off nature. On his journey into the wild, Chris relied on himself and nature to survive. He was disciplined when it came to what he needed, and didn’t have to communicate with others all the time. In the
He made a lot of mistakes based on arrogance. I don’t admire him at all for his courage nor his noble ideas. Really, I think he was just plain crazy,” shows that Shaun believes Chris had no common sense in his doing for leaving society for the wild. I agree with Callarman’s position of thinking “ he had no common sense” and that he was “bright and Ignorant” because Chris thinks he did not have much to offer in his society, ditched all his possessions to take a trip into the Alaskan Wilderness and did not have much common sense or survival skills. Chris McCandless was very courageous for ditching all his possessions to take a trip in the wilderness.
Chris McCandless was someone who didn’t believe in having money, and items that were materialistic. He was considered an idealist because he didn’t put judgement on people based on how they look, he did it based on his personal values. In the author’s note Krakauer also believed Chris was a “intense young man and possessed a streak of stubborn idealism that did not mesh readily with modern existence”. After getting your degree in college, and your parents buying you a new car you don’t think to just throw it all away to go live in the wild on your own, but that’s exactly what Chris did. Items that would seem extremely important to everyone one else in society didn’t matter to Chris, because it wasn’t a necessity for him.
