Although there are many factors that affect an individual’s perspective of the world, culture always shapes perception because it introduces a basis for what is usual in life and what is uncommon in their eyes. Based off of what I know, people view the world a certain way because that is the way they were taught to view it. Many people develop their values, beliefs and assumptions based on what they are told and taught as children. Knowing that, it is difficult for people to change their beliefs because they dislike ideas that go against the values or beliefs they were taught to be true. They have this constant fear that if they even try to view something from a different perspective, their original values will be seen as incorrect. Considering that, we can use Annie Dillard’s essay, “Sight into Insight”, where she gives her readers two different ways she believes everyone should see the world, in order to understand the comparison made between whales and humans, as mentioned in Brian Doyle’s essay, “Joyas Voladoras”.

A person's view on culture heavily influence how one sees and views the world around them. People are influenced by the cultures surrounding them as well as where they live. That means you have many different cultures like family culture, friend culture, and interest culture like music culture do you think any of these cultures affect how you view the world? Well, culture affects how we view things entirely because our cultures helps us define our moral senses. Ethnocentrism is a silent problem which many people are not aware of. Some scholars have defined ethnocentrism as “the making of judgements” based on criteria of one’s cultural groups. It is characterized by applying those criteria in judging other behaviors and belief of people who may be from the different cultural backgrounds. Bennett, a founding director and CEO of the Intercultural Development Research Institute (IDR Institute), has defined ethnocentrism as “assuming that the worldview of one’s own culture is central to all reality”. He also suggested that people who has ethnocentric mindset tend to use their own worldview to interpret other’s behavior and that the idea of a “universal truth” is usually based on one’s own value.
