Civil Rights Act Of 1866: Major Issues In National Politics

After slavery, African Americans in the south were in a time of change. Though they were free from slavery, whippings, and auctions, I believe life became difficult for them even after slavery ended. Racism began to grow increasingly, as many could not accept the fact that there was no more slavery. It became stricter when the government in the South enforced laws called Black Codes. Those laws were set to grant only certain rights to people of color.

During the Mid 1800’s marked a crucial period for our country. It will have a big effect on the development of our country. Throughout this time, our country was split, split into two sections, the North and the South. The Civil war was a war fought against the North and the South, the Union and the Confederates, from 1861-1865.

To say the time period following the Civil War in the United States involved a lot of change would be a understatement. Between the years 1870 and 1900 the people of the United States lived through a period of great change. Not only did they witness technological advances that would change their daily lives, they also saw new laws and organizations formed. All of this was done in hopes of improving the country. Many of these changes came about because of the type of businesses that were formed.

The blacks were forced to vote for republicans, the blacks were looked at as free but not as equals in the south, the most powerful people lawyers, doctors and dentists who could make a difference were members of the Ku Klux Klan, who were against reconstruction. The southern leaders of the government only wanted white people in power, the north pulled out all its soldiers from the south, making it even more difficult for the freedmen to be free and equal. On July 02, 1964 , Lyndon Baines Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibited against people discriminating against another because of their skin color , so everybody was treated equally. Slavery was a big issue in the 1800s. It divided the country into an argument between having slavery or not having slavery. It also made a conflict between the north and south and they could not agree on it. Some wanted to keep it, some wanted to get rid of it. The states would argue and they could not come up with a compromise.

There were the Jim Crow Laws which supported discrimination & racial segregation. African Americans were poverty stricken and this was a global issue in the South, newly freed blacks had no economic opportunities and very little jobs being offered. Although reconstruction failed there was a success with the school systems, segregated yes, but there was still an attempt made to educate blacks. Also created a functioning, government in which blacks and whites could participate so African Americans were able to hold office. The ability to vote as an African American was definitely one great result because although there were attempts to place fear to not vote by the Ku Klux Klan there was still the right to have that voice.

As discussed, this act itself gave the congress more power to punish the confederate states who didn't follow it, forcing most states to oblige. With this came some failures still prevalent today like the Klu Klux Klan, as we discussed today have become more racially motivated than politically before. However, there are many positive effects that are often overlooked. The administration inched us closer to a stronger union, more political rights, and diversified economy.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is hailed by many as one of the most important legislations in the American history. The act was passed into law 52 years ago under a lot of pressure and resistance from white senators and African American activists. The act, which was largely known as the “Bill of the century” was aimed at bringing equality for blacks and whites and end racial prejudice. The act was targeted to revolutionize America where blacks and whites would eat together in the same hotels and enjoy similar rights in public places without any discrimination.
