In this paper there has been a discussion of the legislation and the tensions preceding the southern Secession. Based on this discussing it can be concluded that the tensions, which culminated with the Civil War, were present many decades before the secession itself. Even threats of Civil war and secession were present much prior to this particular conflict. 
This paper has also concluded that the threat of Lincoln was real to the South, because of the Republican party’s very distinct foundation as an anti-slavery party. Slavery was a soft spot in the South because of the substantial value slaves had.

Question 1: When Winthrop states ““For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill” he means that the people will look up to them as role models on how to live right and obey God. They are being put on a higher stand stool in order to guide the others in the right direction. I find it very interesting that the southern colonies distinguished themselves from the New England colonies so early on. Furthermore, this gives insight to the reason pre-Civil War era southern elites were so adamant that the South remain a slave society.

The war between the North and the South, also known as the Civil War, was pivotal event for black suffrage and helped shape our modern day society. Although it caused a tragic loss of American life due to discordant values, the Civil War was a necessary evil as the United States would be unrecognizable if it hadn’t. The Emancipation Proclamation of 1862 granted freedom to the slaves in the Confederate States if the States did not return to the Union. Freedom would also only come to the slaves if the Union won the war.

The 1850’s to 1860’s was a crucial decade that had detrimental effects on the unity of the country. Many events agitated and aroused secession of the South from the North and divided the country in two. The country’s highly divided views between the Northerners and Southerners could no longer be mended, and Southern states could only see secession as the most viable option. The greatest controversy that ruptured the unity of the country were the opposing views on slavery; the events that occurred in this decade, as well as the fear that the Southerners had toward the potential abolition of slavery in America was enough for them to leave the union and is what lead to the bloody battle of the Civil War. As America continued to advance and flourish geographically and economically, the country began dividing itself between Southern states that supported and relied heavily on slave labor, and Northern states that were more opposed to slavery.

To say the time period following the Civil War in the United States involved a lot of change would be a understatement. Between the years 1870 and 1900 the people of the United States lived through a period of great change. Not only did they witness technological advances that would change their daily lives, they also saw new laws and organizations formed. All of this was done in hopes of improving the country. Many of these changes came about because of the type of businesses that were formed.
