Work is usually associated with being determined by class in the period and a person’s class is commonly “determined by his or her relationship to the modes of production” . However, although the class of a person’s parents determined their childhood education it was in later life that it was the type of work that determined class and not class that determined work. Class boundaries were not set for life and people could move between working and middle class by finding new employment or starting their own business. When compared with the fact that gender determined what work a person should do in life with the exception of World war one in which both genders on the home front worked to together for Britain.
