During Perry Smith’s confession, he told the authorities that he singlehandedly killed all four Clutters. Perry does not have a motive for the murders. Therefore, Perry decides to blame his actions on the animosity he has for his past. “They [the Clutters] never hurt me. Like other people. Like people have all my life. Maybe it’s just that the Clutter’s were the ones who had to pay for it” (Capote 302). Throughout Perry’s life, people had been harmful and malicious towards him. His childhood consisted of violence and neglect. Perry’s mother was a promiscuous alcoholic, and his father was excessively abusive. When Perry was taken away from his parents, nefarious nuns tortured him at orphanages. Abusive role models in Perry’s life allowed resentment
