Coal And The Appalachian Mountains

For this week, I was assigned to read the chapter, Cravat Coal in Confessions of a Union Buster, were written by Marty Jay Levitt and Terry Conrow and the article was published in 1993. In the article, Levitt and Conrow talked about a lot of things but mostly Wagner Act and what the employers can do or not to the workers. The question for this assignment—“Based on details in the article, “Cravat Coal”, how does the Wagner Act favor the employer?” The authors talked about delaying time showed the workers that union is not a quick fix.

Hence its nickname the Mountain State. It is also known for its outdoor recreation, coal production and surplus. Most of West Virginia was composed of 1,744,237 people in total as this was a time of increase in population.

Cultural standards all over the world vary based on religion, economy, morals and numerous other factors. The infamous region of the United States known as Appalachia, where values and standards are as diverse as the hollows that define the region, is no different. Native Appalachian author Sharyn McCrumb inarguably portrays such values and standards that North Carolinian Loyal Jones also outlines in his excerpt from Voices From the Hills. Throughout the novel of She Walks These Hills McCrumb illustrates such traits by depicting life in the mountains of Mitchell County, North Carolina, whose citizens personify the mentioned traits of being independent, hospitality and love of place. As Jones discusses, “individualism, self-reliance and pride”

The Trail of Tears is an important and controversial part of American history. John Ehle really digs deep into the happenings during this time. Ehle’s purpose of writing this book is to enlighten people that do not know much of the removal of the Cherokees from their land. He wants to inform and make people aware of the politics, changes in society, and the struggles of the Cherokees back in the 1800s.

Neil M. Maher wrote Nature’s New Deal to argue the idea that the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was one of the most important New Deal programs of the Progressive Era. The author explains how the programs popularity not only changed the physical landscape of the United States, but also the political landscape. The Civilian Conservation Corps began on the Massanuteen Mountains in the George Washington National Forest in 1933. The climbing of a pine tree, by John Ripley was the beginning of changing the natural landscape across America (Pg. 3).

In the United States there are over 400 places that the National Parks Service (NPS) protects. In Katy Steinmetz’s article “A Monumental Fight” she give some background on how the dispute over the national funding of parks started. The dispute over national parks and their funding have been a debate for over a hundred years. It started in 1906 when Teddy Roosevelt used the Antiquities Act to create eighteen national monuments. National monuments legally must have objects of scientific or historical value to become a monument.

Shenandoah National Park is located in Virginia, reaching a height of 4,051 feet or 1,235 m. The park includes more than 100 miles of the Appalachian trail and 518 miles of hiking trails. Because of air pollution in Shenandoah National Park they are now monitoring the air by how it looks, gases around this area and the atmospheric deposition. Ground level ozone requirements do not meet that of the parks which has caused around 40 of the park’s plants to be harmed. While monitoring the air they discovered that it was human-caused air pollution and is the reason for the air quality, visibility, soils, native fish, vegetation and stream-water chemistry. Air pollution is a harmful thing that can cause the environment harm like it did to Shenandoah.

The factors that led the three groups for the strike were different in every situation. The miners went on strike because their pay roll were not that good or not that high for live life perfectly. Their working condition not that good, and they wanted their union recognized. The Colorado Fuel and Iron Company also monopolizing them by having to buy good sold at stores run by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. In turn the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company also paid the teacher and doctors assigned to the camps.

An Avalanche is a rapid flow of snow down a hill or mountain side. An Avalanche is caused by new snow or rain can cause snow to suddenly dislodge and cascade down the side of a mountain. Avalanches have been known to be caused by earthquakes or other natural movements. Avalanches have a better chance to occur in mountains such as the Appalachian Mountains, or any other mountain with a 35-45 degree angle. Avalanches can cause flash floods, or economic impact.

During the mid-1800s, the South, a region of solely one industry, found itself isolated from the rest of the U.S. Naturally, in respect to their primarily industry, instead of taking part in the quickly expanding rail network in America going on during this age, the South advanced as market and transportation centers instead. In addition, an other isolation factor was the major barrier of the Appalachian Mountains, which presented difficulties in attempts to building railroad lines. Lew presents this as one of the factors which tribute to the high degree of isolation and lower development level in the deep

It is a warm summer night and shades of orange, red, and gold appear in the sky over the pine-covered hills. The sun soon disappears beneath the dark hills and darkness settles over the land. The buffalo, antelope, and elk find places to rest for the night and all is quiet except for the creeks and birds. In several hours, the sky will again be lit with a multitude of colors and the animals will begin to rise. A new day will begin in the Black Hills, just like it did hundreds of years ago.

In Lost Mountain, Reece’s use of logos, and his personal experience helps his ethos builds a strong argument. He becomes a credible author through being a life, eye witness of the whole process, as well as his superior skills in research and presentation of said research. Throughout the book, the use of his statistics, comparisons and eye witness observations all add to his credibility. His use of pathos build his use of logos and ethos help the reader trust and view him as a credible source, as well as connect emotionally to the potentially distant topic of mountain top removal.

Coal mining in Cape Breton is an important piece of history, it gave many men, young and old, secure jobs. Jobs that also meant endangering their lives every day as they went into the mines, possibilities of dust explosions threatened them daily along with unknown threats to their health, breathing in the dust from the mines would build up and cause serious long term lung diseases. Taking jobs in the mines meant being put in a company town, leaving them little to none free choice of their own, also taking the job meant being paid very little which resulted in hunger and poverty among the miners, and when striking against the company for more money and more power over their own lives it resulted in extreme police brutality towards the miners.

The theme of this book is about a volcanic eruption that occurred May 18th, 1980 at 8:32am at Mount St. Helens. The explosion was equal to ten million tons of dynamite and shot up into the sky for more than 12 miles. These toxic gases that shot out of the volcano covered a great deal of the forest. As a result, most of the forest was burnt down almost instantly by the massive blast. Leading up to the eruption there were many warning signs, including: large cracks in the mountain and small earthquakes.

“More than 600 hundred earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 and higher have occurred within the 50 miles in the past decade alone (253).” By giving out this information, he indicates that a place that should be a safe zone to store nuclear waste may not be so because of the disturbance to the mountain. This is important because it tells readers of how unsafe the mountain is to store such deadly chemicals. He also adds onto the fear factor by comparing the dangers of nuclear waste, and Colorado’s natural uranium that is still left in the soil with the potential danger of water
