Do you think cutting someone's hand off because they striked their father is fair? Hummurabi’s code was just because it helps protect the weak. If someone commits a crime it makes sure no one will do it by using harsh punishments. It also helps protect property and property equaled power. Hammurabi code was created in the empire of Babyloina in Mesopotamia.

They were the first set of written laws. The purpose was to punish people for stealing ,murdering,and other things. Hammurabi’s codes were just because it is a punishment and they are fair to people. Hammurabi’s Code is just for two reasons family law and property law.

Hammurabi’s Code DBQ King Hammurabi’s rule began in the city of Babylon. He later then extended his control by taking over Larsa and Mari a large part of Mesopotamia. After expanding his land, Shamash, the god of justice presented him with a code of 232 laws (Doc A). Today’s current justice system requires police departments, court trials, and lawyers to determine right from wrong, but back in early history things were much more different. Straying away from legal court cases there was the first actual uniform set of laws to keep civilians in check called Hammurabi’s code. Four hundred centuries ago most of Mesopotamia (which was the first civilization) was under the rule of King Hammurabi who at first only had power over a limited part of the city in Babylon which was a city-state at the time.

Why Hammurabi’s code is just Hammurabi ruled about Babylonia about 40 centuries ago, for about 42 years. The estimated population of Babylonia was about one million people. The size of Babylonia (north to south) was about 400 miles, During the time when Hammurabi ruled he created a set of laws. Written in cuneiform and carved on to the stone stele were his laws.

The Code of Hammurabi was a comprehensive set of laws that are considered by many scholars and historians to be the oldest laws established. They were passed down for four thousand years by King Hammurabi of Babylon. Although the code was created with good intent and humanitarian intent it contained the “eye for an eye” theory of punishment, which is a very barbaric form of the concept of making the punishment fit the crime. This and many other laws within the code tell us humans a lot about the Mesopotamian civilization but one’s that stood out are code numbers 3, 5, and 6. The Code of Hammurabi was a unique set of laws and had many interesting ones, but one that I think that stood out and revealed a lot about Mesopotamian civilization is code number 3, “if anyone bring an accusation of any crime before the elders, and does not prove what he has charged, he shall, if it be a capital offence charged, be put to death.”

The Stele of Hammurabi is one of the earliest identified codes of laws. Inscribed upon an impressive seven-and-a-half feet tall pillar are 282 laws and standards, which the King of Babylon, Hammurabi, formed in the 18th Century B.C. These laws that he created for his people covered topics from adoption to property rights. Although it contains a retributive justice system, primitive punishments, and gender and status inequality, it was one of the most comprehensive compendiums of law of its time.

Mosaic law was documented approximately 300 years after Hammurabi's code. The Hammurabi's Code is one of first written law record in earth history. With this in mind, in this essay, I will contrast the similar and the different cultures of the Babylonian and Hebrew civilizations through analyzing Hammurabi's Code and Mosaic law found in Leviticus 17-22 and Exodus 20-23. Base on my studies, I believe that the Babylonian laws are primarily covering the matters of administrative, civil, criminal issues, and economic to maintain orders. Whereas, the Hebraic laws were base on the worship of one true God throughout their life.

For the first 30 years Hammurabi ruled, beginning in 1792 BC, he ruled Babylon, which was the capital of Babylonia at that time. He ruled over about 1,000,000 people, consisting mostly of farmers.

Hammurabi was the first to make the law code meaning he was the first to start the foundation for our law system today. He was the father of law and today his justice code is still apparent today. What should be of interest to many is that every one of the ancient Holy Books of the world comprises the knowledge that a Loving God has given to his children. It includes the ancient Sanskrit texts of the Rigveda, the Upanishads, the Gita, the Avesta, the Quran, the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, and so on, but there is a problem with the translations of those texts in print today. The translators of those books are mistaken in thinking that the texts are written in the common languages of Sanskrit, Avestan, Hebrew, Aramaic, and so on.
