Imperialism in Latin America
Imperialism is viewed differently in different areas of the world. The United States view imperialism as a good thing. Latin America views imperialism from the united states as a bad thing. It was beneficial for the United States. It was also not so beneficial for the United States. It was also a little beneficial for Latin America. It was greatly not beneficial for Latin America.
The reason United States view imperialism as a good thing is because they traded with Latin America (United States).. They got many goods from them. Even though Latin American countries did not like imperialism they still got a few things from imperialism. The first thing that they got is money. The at first got it from England but then england started to want them to pay back so the came to America looking for money (Latin America). America gave them the money but in return they asked for their railroad system and the national bank (Latin America). The second thing they got is political power. Approximately 5600 workers died (United States). They also had to loan money to Nicaragua(United States). In the end they lost the canal (Brazil).In the text it says “...US agreed to return the canal back to Panama…” (Brazil). Many countries loved that America built the canal because they can get their supplies faster now and don't have to spend time going around South America like they used to before. Imperialism was a controversial idea that a nation can extend its power outward through means of diplomatic or military force. This often results in a shift of power from one major force currently in control to another. The people of that nation under control conflict may also experience wars, rebellions, or cultural destruction. Looking at some of these events, we see some positives and negatives of imperialistic action taken by the United States, and how it affected the nations imperialized by the United States. For starters, let’s look at Hawaii’s annexation.
The imperialistic mentality of the American government after the Civil War, led to some degree to the Spanish-American war that would render a great acquisition of land for the United States. However, imperialism would not be the sole factor that led to the war against Spain, but also the sympathy felt by the American government towards Cuba’s efforts in fighting for their independence; additionally, the United States would seek to protect its commercial interests (sugar) in the island. Therefore, after invoking the Spanish to secede from their brutal practices towards Cuban rebels and attain a peaceful end to the situation, the United States arbitrarily sent a navy ship, “The USS Maine” to monitor the area.
Imperialism drove the world, from the Roman Empire, to America in the early 1900’s. The US imperialized nations to give them peace, gain their natural resources, and protect them. But not all things imperialism are good. When the US imperialized some nations, it limited their ability to govern and protect themselves. But the US has more experience doing so in a modern world, and would ultimately benefit them.
In 1494, the Treaty of Tordesillas was established in order to evenly divide unclaimed lands between Portugal and Spain. This led to the Line of Demarcation, in which the non-European world was divided into two zones. Portugal had rights to the eastern hemisphere, and Spain had rights to the western hemisphere. This allowed Spain to colonize areas in the New World. Even though they had this opportunity, they were not able to colonize specific areas in North America due to competition with other European countries.
Since the Creoles are American born, they have limited rights in Latin America compared to the Peninsulares who had the majority power. ”-we are struggling to maintain ourselves in the country that gave us birth against the opposition of the invaders.” (Document A).Also due to the creoles birthplace (Latin America), they have a limit of personal and property rights. “Will you recover the lands stolen three hundred years ago from your forefathers by the hated Spaniards?” (Document E).
The Spanish exploration and colonisation made both a positive and negative impact on Latin America. The arrival of the Spanish explorers to the new world made a big change and they are the reason Latin America looks the way it does today. However these people were ruthless and were the tyrants of the new world. One of Spain’s major foreign policy objectives since the advent of democracy has been to increase its influence in Latin America. Spain has had interest in this area due to historical ties and a common linguistic, cultural and religious heritage (Countrystudies.us, 2017).
In the 19th century, America was growing more rapidly than it had in the past. Cities were multiplying in size wealthy places and the slums. From the popularity of cities to rural areas the need for land was high. Only so many people grasping for land meant someone had to go either the Natives or the Americans had to to do what they could with their own land. A philosophy of Manifest Destiny was brought forth but with a catch that expansionism could be seen as imperialism instead.
Imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. It is a great way to strengthen the economy and gain power and territory for countries that practice it, though it often failed and resulted in war and the deaths of innocents. Four intellectuals that played a big part in influencing American imperialism were Frederick Jackson Turner, Alfred T. Mahan, Herbert Spencer and John Fisk. All of these influencers had different ideologies and came together to justify American imperialism. They believed America needed to expand power and gain territories.
